Storms have unleashed more than a foot of rain across the region, and the forecast offered little hope for relief. Another, larger system was brewing along the same path, bringing several more days of rain and the possibility of tornadoes. The greatest flooding threat loomed in the southeastern Missouri community of Poplar Bluff, a town of 17,000 residents about 130 ...
POPLAR BLUFF, Mo. - Thunder roared and tornado warning sirens blared, and all emergency workers in the southeast Missouri town of Poplar Bluff could do Monday was hope the saturated levee holding back the Black River would survive yet another downpour. Murky water flowed over the levee at more than three dozen spots and crept toward homes in the flood plain. Some had already flooded. If the levee broke - and forecasters said it was in imminent danger of doing so - some 7,000 residents in and around Poplar Bluff would be displaced. One thousand homes were evacuated earlier in the day. ...
WASHINGTON -- A year ago, when Republicans were in the minority on Capitol Hill, they drove Democrats crazy by using an obscure parliamentary maneuver to change, delay and even kill Democratic priorities. Now that Republicans are running the House, Democrats have tried to stymie the GOP agenda by relying on the tactic, known as the motion to recommit. But they've failed on every one of their 23 attempts this year. That motion is almost always the last step just before the final vote on a bill. It gives the minority party, which has little voice and few rights in the House, a last chance to ...

Kathy Michelle Coy, the Kentucky woman accused of murdering 21-year-old Jamie Stice and kidnapping her newborn son, may have spent more than six months plotting the alleged crime, according to a friend of the victim. "Jamie fell in her trap," Stice's close friend Ashley Nicole told AOL News. "She [allegedly] kidnapped her, killed her and then cut her baby out of her. I'm still in shock. It is unimaginable." According to Nicole, Coy, 33, friended Stice on Facebook and told her that she was from an agency that helps pregnant women and could help get her clothes for her baby. She also told ...
Dangerous thunderstorms will spread into large portions of the East and South today and tonight, with the threat of damaging wind, large hail and isolated tornadoes extending from western New England to the Gulf Coast. The new storms are associated with the same storm system that produced tornadoes in the Plains and Midwest over the weekend. The most widespread severe weather will occur from later this afternoon through this evening, when unseasonable warmth in advance of the storm -- part of the fuel for the thunderstorms -- will reach its peak. While the possibility of isolated tornadoes ...
COLUMBUS, Ohio -- An elderly Kentucky con man who pleaded guilty to five slayings in Wisconsin and Ohio - and was on death row for his most recent crime - has died in prison of natural causes, an Ohio prisons spokesman said Friday. Edward Edwards, 77, died Thursday night at the Corrections Medical Center in Columbus, where he was being held, spokesman Carlo LoParo told The Associated Press. An autopsy was to be performed, but it was not immediately clear whether it had been completed. Edwards' death was first reported by the Daily Jefferson County Union newspaper in Fort Atkinson, Wis. The ...
The second major outbreak of dangerous thunderstorms and tornadoes is poised to sweep across parts of the United States in the coming days, following quickly on the heels of a storm that produced more than 1,800 severe weather reports earlier this week, including 66 tornado reports. The severe weather is expected to be most widespread on Sunday. The Storm Prediction Center, comprising the government's thunderstorm and tornado forecasting experts, has outlined a large area from the Plains to the Midwest and parts of the South as a potentially dangerous region on Sunday and Sunday night. The ...
The eastern Kentucky jury that heard the case of a man accused in the bow-and-arrow murder of a husband and wife and the burning death of their three young children returned a curious split verdict in Clay Circuit Court in Manchester. Clayton Jackson, 30, was found guilty Wednesday of murder and arson in the deaths of 4-year-old Michael Sturgill, 3-year-old Robert Sturgill and 18-month-old Jordan Sturgill. But, following two days of deliberations, the jury was unable to decide whether Jackson was responsible for the deaths of the children's parents, Chris and Amanda Sturgill, who were killed ...
The powerful storm system that swept through the Plains on Sunday and to the East Coast today, killing at least seven people in the Deep South, spawned over 1,500 reports of severe weather since Sunday, including a record-breaking 1,200-plus reports during one 24-hour period. The hardest hit regions were the Tennessee Valley, Mississippi Valley and the Southeast, where the majority of the reports piled up from early Monday through early Tuesday. During the 24 hours, more preliminary severe weather reports -- large hail, wind damage and tornadoes -- were tallied than in any other 24-hour ...
