Rand Paul: Like Father, Like Son?

By  David Corn - Politics Daily
Rand Paul: Like Father, Like Son?

We all learn much from our parents -- whether we admit it or not. Rand Paul's problem appears to be that he absorbed an important -- but perhaps counterproductive -- lesson from his father: You can succeed in politics by saying what you really think. Ron Paul, the libertarian Republican congressman from Texas who ran for president in 2008, has done well for himself speaking his mind -- no matter how unorthodox his brain waves may be. An anti-government advocate, he's known in Washington as Dr. No for consistently voting against federal programs of all sorts. He's been a never-ending critic ...

Rand Paul Starts Out With Big Lead in Kentucky Senate Race

Rand Paul Starts Out With Big Lead in Kentucky Senate Race

The first poll since insurgent GOP candidate Rand Paul won Tuesday's Kentucky Senate primary has him vaulting to a 25-point lead over the Democratic nominee, Attorney General Jack Conway. Paul leads Conway, 59 percent to 34 percent, with 4 percent preferring someone else and 3 percent undecided, according to a Rasmussen Reports poll conducted May 19. In late April, his lead had been 9 points and in March it was 14 points. What remains to be seen is how much of this was a bounce from his big victory over Secretary of State Trey Grayson and the attention his candidacy got because of its ...

Rand Paul's Victory, Arlen Specter's Defeat, and the Quest for Authenticity

Rand Paul's Victory, Arlen Specter's Defeat, and the Quest for Authenticity

Voter rage is the reigning cliché emerging from Tea Party favorite Rand Paul's lopsided victory over establishment candidate Trey Grayson in the Kentucky GOP Senate primary. Coupled with the Pennsylvania primary defeat of Arlen Specter -- a very new Democrat but a very old senator -- the Kentucky results suggest that voters are getting ready to storm the castles of power, wielding hoes and pitchforks. Forgive me from deviating from press-pack orthodoxy, but after covering the Kentucky Senate race, I just do not see things in those monochromatic terms. Paul's campaign speeches avoid the ...

Rand Paul's Challenge: Holding on to the Republican Vote

Rand Paul's Challenge: Holding on to the Republican Vote

Secretary of State Trey Grayson, who was trounced in Kentucky's GOP senate primary by Tea Party favorite Rand Paul, said during the campaign, "Democrats are salivating to run against a guy who can be portrayed as anti-farmer, anti-teacher and anti-Kentucky." Polling during the primary race gives some support to that view. But what also might work against Paul is that while Grayson, the candidate of his party's establishment, mustered only 35 percent of the vote, that may represent a chunk of Republicans that will bail out on Paul, given the fact that there was no love lost between the two ...

Rand Paul Credits Tea Party for GOP Senate Nomination in Kentucky

Rand Paul Credits Tea Party for GOP Senate Nomination in Kentucky

Introducing her husband, Rand Paul, at the final rally of his insurgent primary campaign for the Kentucky GOP Senate nomination, Kelley Paul declared: "When Rand said last year that he wanted to run, I wasn't too enthusiastic at first. And one of the ways he talked me into it was telling me that he had less than a 10 percent chance of actually winning." Her reminiscence prompted a burst of laughter from the hometown crowd in Bowling Green. But, actually, the tote board among Kentucky political insiders would have put the odds even lower that the 47-year-old eye surgeon (and the son of 2008 ...

Rand Paul Wins GOP Senate Nomination in Kentucky

Rand Paul Wins GOP Senate Nomination in Kentucky

Kentucky Republicans struck the first blow at the Washington establishment Tuesday night by choosing political newcomer Rand Paul as their Senate nominee. Paul, an ophthalmologist and Tea Party favorite, defeated Secretary of State Trey Grayson, who had been championed by Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky. Kentucky, Arkansas and Pennsylvania were holding high-stakes Senate primaries on "Super Senate Tuesday." Sens. Arlen Specter of Pennsylvania and Blanche Lincoln of Arkansas were hoping to hold off challengers trying to capitalize on anti-incumbent sentiment. Paul is the ...

Will Rand Paul Hand the Tea Party Movement Its Biggest Victory Ever?

LOUISVILLE – Riding high in the polls, Rand Paul – the insurgent Senate candidate who has upended the Kentucky GOP primary and the son of libertarian firebrand Ron Paul – offered a preview of his anticipated triumphant message Tuesday night. "This has enormous implications for the power and the impact of the Tea Party movement," he declared. "If we win Tuesday, it will be the biggest victory for a Tea Party candidate in the country...It will show that the Tea Party can elect somebody." These words were delivered not on a campaign stage surrounded by sign-waving supporters, ...

As next week's Kentucky senate primary nears, Rand Paul continues to hold a double digit lead over Secretary of State Trey Grayson in the GOP race while, on the Democratic side, Lt. Gov. Dan Mongiardo and Attorney General Jack Conway are almost evenly tied, according to a SurveyUSA poll conducted May 9-11.
