U.S. Backs South Korea in Severing Trade With North Korea

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said Sunday that the United States "uniequevocally supports" a decision by South Korean leaders to sever nearly all trade with North Korea after what they called a deliberate sinking of a South Korean warship two months ago, the New York Times reports. South Korean President Lee Myun-bak said that his nation would deny North Korean merchant ships the use of South Korean sea lanes and ask the United Nations Security Council to punish its northern neighbor for the sinking. President Obama instructed American military commanders to coordinate with South Korean ...

American Missionary Is Believed Held by North Korea

An Arizona man intent upon bringing a message of "Christ's love" to North Korean leader Kim Jong Il is apparently in custody after entering the communist nation on Christmas Eve. The state-run Korea Central News Agency said that an American was arrested after entering North Korea from China and is "now under investigation by a relevant organ." It did not identify him, but the man is believed to be Robert Park, a 28-year-old Korean-American missionary who posted his intentions on a Web site earlier this month. CNN reports that the U.S. State Department has not been able to confirm Park's ...

Obama Wrote Personal Letter to Kim Jong Il

President Obama has written a personal letter to North Korean leader Kim Jong Il that was hand-delivered by the U.S. envoy to the country, theWashington Post reports. The contents -- and until now, even the existence -- of the letter were kept closely guarded by the administration, which requested that diplomatic partners refrain from discussing it publicly. Stephen Bosworth, the U.S. envoy to North Korea, sidestepped questions about his mission last week, telling reporters that he himself was "the message," sparking news in Asia that he was not carrying a letter. Letters from U.S. presidents ...

North Korea in 'Final Stage' of Enriching Uranium

After making the seemingly conciliatory gestures of releasing two American journalists and offering to restart trade with South Korea, North Korea has informed the United Nations that it is in the "final phase" of uranium enrichment for the purpose of creating nuclear weapons. Experts described the announcement as the latest move in a "high-stakes game of diplomatic cat and mouse," in which Pyongyang alternately threatens and cajoles. ...

Bill Richardson Hosting North Korean Diplomats

Bill Richardson Hosting North Korean Diplomats

In yet another potential sign of warming relations between the United States and North Korea, New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson will host two of Kim Jong Il's top diplomats in Santa Fe on Wednesday. The meeting with Richardson -- who served as a U.S. ambassador to the United Nations and who visited North Korea several times during the Clinton presidency -- comes at the request of the diplomats, the State Department confirmed. According to sources, Richardson will be all ears, but won't be authorized to negotiate. The meeting follows Bill Clinton's successful visit to Pyongyang, during which ...

Sen. Jim Webb Preps for Meeting With Head of Myanmar Junta

Just three days after the leader of Myanmar's opposition was sentenced to additional house arrest, setting off harsh criticism from the United States, the Asian nation is set to receive a surprising visitor. As part of a two-week tour of Southeast Asia, Sen. Jim Webb (D-Va.) touched down in Myanmar on Friday and is set to become the highest-ranking American official to meet with the head of Myanmar's junta, Than Shwe. ...

Hillary Clinton Counters John Bolton's Criticism of North Korea Trip

Hillary Clinton had a response to former U.N. ambassador John Bolton's complaints about her husband's visit to North Korea to free journalists Euna and Laura Ling: a peal of laughter. In an interview with CNN's Fareed Zakaria that aired on Sunday, the secretary of state chuckled when asked about Bolton's comments, saying that Bill Clinton's trip to North Korea was in no way a negotiation with the belligerent state. Said Secretary Clinton: ...

John Bolton: Bill Clinton's Release of Euna Lee and Laura Ling Puts Americans at Risk

The news that former president Bill Clinton's visit to North Korea ended with the release of journalists Euna Lee and Laura Ling was met with celebration -- but not universally. Former ambassador to the U.N. John Bolton has insisted that Clinton's trip increases the risk level of other Americans. Calling the trip a "significant propaganda victory for North Korea," Bolton warned in Tuesday's Washington Post that the increased attention brought by the former president would have dangerous consequences for future hostages. ...

The North Korea Effect: Democrats Are One Big Happy Family

By  Jill Lawrence - Politics Daily
The North Korea Effect: Democrats Are One Big Happy Family

Contrary to reports from North Korea's state news agency, the White House says Bill Clinton did not apologize during his successful pursuit of pardons for Current TV journalists Laura Ling and Euna Lee. There were no apologies in this country, either, but the release and homecoming of the two women seems to have washed away some bad blood among Democrats. We may never know exactly what transpired between the former president and North Korean leader Kim Jong-Il, or for that matter between Clinton and the Obama administration, or Clinton and his former vice president, Al Gore, the co-founder of ...
