The Rev. Terry Jones, whose past rhetoric against Muslims has inflamed anti-Western sentiment in Afghanistan, said he refused to pay the $1 bond because to do so would violate his freedom of speech. He later paid it and was released. Jones had planned a demonstration Friday evening outside the Islamic Center of America in ...

Here it is, but what does it mean? The British rock unit Radiohead released its much anticipated new album on today. While the 37 minutes of music on the new offering has already been getting high praise from critics, some fans are wondering about the title. Related Stories Radiohead's 'The King of Limbs' and 'Lotus Flower' Video: The First Reviews Are In So far, two main references to "King of Limbs" have been turned up. Maj. Nidal Hasan, the Army psychiatrist accused of going on a shooting spree at Fort Hood in 2009, was known as a "ticking time bomb" who could have been stopped by the military or the FBI. That's the conclusion of a Senate inquiry led by Sen. Joe Lieberman, I-Conn., and Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine. In an 89-page report released today, Lieberman and Collins criticized the Army, the FBI and the Department of Defense for failing to act on worrisome information about Hasan. Thirty-two people were wounded and 13 were killed during the Fort Hood massacre. Although previous investigations have ...
It's that time of year when thoughts turn to holiday bargains, family get-togethers, peace on Earth and, hopefully, good will to all. It's also time to look back at stunning, unusual and downright far-out images of people, places and oddities captured in 2010. Think of AOL Weird News as your one-stop shop to read about and view the most striking and often bizarre images to be seen anywhere. 2010 will be remembered for many newsworthy events, but some of the items that we at AOL News were especially moved by included things like bullfighter Julio Aparicio's face-goring moment, or those naked ...
(Nov. 29) -- Shariah law, OK? An Oklahoma federal judge has put a hold on Ballot Question 755 -- aka the "Shariah law amendment" -- which forbids state courts from implementing international laws, including Islamic Shariah law. The permanent injunction will grant the judge additional time to consider issues surrounding the amendment. Oklahoma federal Judge Vicki Miles-LaGrange previously blocked implementation of the ballot measure, which was approved by voters in early November, in light of a lawsuit filed by the Council on American-Islamic Relations aiming to nullify the law. That motion ...

The unidentified teenager is accused of torching the Islamic holy book at her school in Sandwell, near the city of Birmingham in central England, as other students watched. She was questioned by police on Friday and was released later that day pending further inquiries. Police also arrested a 14-year-old boy on Tuesday on suspicion of making threats on the social ...
ISTANBUL (Nov. 16) -- Two Turkish men seized a struggling lamb from a crowded pen and dragged it by its front feet so it was walking on its hind legs to the corner of a parking lot here. They then held the lamb down and one of the men slit the kicking lamb's throat with a short, sharp knife. Next, they sliced off the lamb's head and skin and finally cut the meat into parts, which were put into plastic bags that were carried off by a satisfied customer in a denim jacket. This ritual of slaughtering of lambs and also cows, goats and other animals is happening across Turkey and many other ...
(Nov. 3) -- Which is greater, man's law or God's law? The answer to that question depends in part on whom you ask and on which religion is being considered. On Tuesday, for instance, voters in Oklahoma passed State Question 755, aka the "Shariah law amendment," which changed the state constitution so that Oklahoma courts are now forbidden from "considering or using" both international law and Shariah law when making their decisions. Here's some of the text of the measure: International law is also known as the law of nations. It deals with the conduct of international organizations and ...
The pastor of a tiny Gainesville, Fla. church who last month sparked a domestic political uproar and an international crisis with plans to burn hundreds of Korans to mark 9/11 was dismissed as crazy by many, but Terry Jones is no fool. At the height of tensions over Jones' threat, a New Jersey car dealer offered the pastor a new car if he would back off his Koran-burning plans -- and now Jones says he wants the dealer, Mitsubishi Hyundai dealer Brad Benson of South Brunswick, to make good on the deal. Jones told The Associated Press he plans to donate the car to an organization that helps ...
