Susana Martinez, Marco Rubio and the New Latino Leadership

Susana Martinez, Marco Rubio and the New Latino Leadership

Out of the historic victory of a surprising number of Hispanic Republican candidates in the midterms two weeks ago, a new political profile of Latino leadership is taking shape, and it runs counter to the dominant liberal and pro-Democrat image. After the remarkable electoral shakeup of Nov. 2, the time seems ripe for this sort of turnover -- time to reset shopworn ideas and cast out old images. New Hispanic leaders with a different bent of mind would seem primed to fill a vacuum at the helm of the nation's 47 million Hispanics. According to a recent Pew Hispanic Center survey, most Latinos ...

U.S. Latinos Lack National Leader, Survey Finds

Who speaks on a national level for Latinos living in the United States? That job, according to Latinos themselves, is waiting to be filled, according to a new survey out Monday. Asked by the Pew Hispanic Center to name "the most important Latino leader in the country today," nearly two-thirds -- 64 percent -- of Hispanic respondents said they did not know. An additional 10 percent said "no one." Some seven percent of Hispanics said Sonia Sotomayor, the newest justice on the U.S. Supreme Court, is the nation's most important Latino leader. She was the most frequently named person in the ...

The Color of Legalized Pot? California's Prop 19 Ignites Intraracial Tension

The Color of Legalized Pot? California's Prop 19 Ignites Intraracial Tension

(Oct. 26) -- We all know the stereotypes: Opponents of marijuana are people with short hair, khaki pants and light skin who like a good amount of mayonnaise on their white bread, and supporters are... pretty much everyone else. But in California, as everywhere else, the racial lines are blurry, and old stereotypes might prove a poor predictor of how the various populations in the nation's largest, most diverse state will vote when it comes to Proposition 19. As November draws near, there are increasing signs that race will play an important role in the upcoming vote on whether to legalize ...

NAACP Study: Whites Smoke More Pot, but Blacks and Latinos Are Arrested More

NAACP Study: Whites Smoke More Pot, but Blacks and Latinos Are Arrested More

(Oct. 21 ) -- Is it a smoke screen, or proof of the need for change? As California prepares to vote on Proposition 19, which would legalize recreational use of marijuana for people 18 and older, a new study by the NAACP finds that the state's African-American and Latino residents are far more likely to be arrested for low-level pot possession, even though whites, according to government statistics, use the drug in greater numbers. "Since 1990, arrests for nearly every serious crime have declined in California," the report says. "Yet arrests for possession of marijuana, usually for very small ...

Univision Refuses to Air Ad Urging Hispanics Not to Vote

Univision Refuses to Air Ad Urging Hispanics Not to Vote

A conservative Hispanic group hoping to get Latinos to stay home on Election Day won't be getting its message out on Univision. The Spanish-language network said Tuesday it would not air an ad from the GOP-led Latinos For Reform that has a blunt message: "Don't vote." "Univision will not be running any spots from Latinos for Reform related to voting," Univision spokeswoman Monica Talan told Politico. "Univision prides itself on promoting civic engagement and our extensive national campaigns encourage Hispanics to vote." The minute-and-a-half-long spot argues that by staying away from the ...

Opinion: Look What's Missing From Daytime TV

Opinion: Look What's Missing From Daytime TV

(Sept. 17) -- Recent news from the world of daytime television has heralded some dramatic changes: the decline of soap operas. The remaking of talk shows from tabloid to respectable (so much so that President Barack Obama can drop by). The dusting off of old game shows -- "Let's Make a Deal," "The Price Is Right" -- with snazzier sets and hipper hosts. Yet from where I sit, the picture remains depressingly similar to the one I grew up watching. Despite just released Nielsen statistics that show 40 percent of new television homes will be Hispanic, among the casts of the many daytime talk shows ...

Immigration Fight: Has Arizona's Get-Tough Law Changed Everything?

Immigration Fight: Has Arizona's Get-Tough Law Changed Everything?

Capitol Hill press conferences normally radiate the sincerity of an airline crew on a late-arriving regional jet robotically thanking each passenger at the exit door for enduring flying with them. But there was a faint whiff of the genuine article early Thursday evening when beleaguered Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and four senior Democrats unveiled their framework for an immigration reform bill. The message from each of the Democrats can be summarized in words often uttered by lonely children on sunny Saturday afternoons: "Will the Republicans come out and play, please?" After going ...

Latino Census Promo Called 'Blasphemous'

Latino Census Promo Called 'Blasphemous'

Civilrights.org NALEO's poster has become a theological bone of contention. (Dec. 15) -- A poster meant to encourage Latinos to participate in the 2010 Census is turning into a theological bone of contention, reported USA Today. The poster, which depicts Joseph and a pregnant Mary arriving in Bethlehem more than two millennia ago, has been called "blasphemous" by one Latino cleric. The connection between the Census and the birth of Jesus may need a word of explanation. According to the Gospel of Luke, USA Today said, Joseph had returned to Bethlehem to be counted in the Roman census. Since ...

Obama Reaches Out to Latinos With One Hand, Gets Tough With the Other

When President Obama addressed the Congressional Hispanic Caucus last week at its annual gala, he was applauded 28 times in 17 minutes. The warm reception reflected the success of his outreach to Latinos, even as he has postponed immigration reform to next year and taken tough stands on undocumented immigrants. ...

Once Again, Obama Plays Race Card

By  Justin Paulette - Politics Daily
Once Again, Obama Plays Race Card

This time, Obama is preying upon Latinos, running an ad which falsely smears McCain as anti-Hispanic. The Spanish-speaking ad accuses McCain of "intolerance" and of "insulting" Latinos, of "abandoning" them in favor of "special interest." The ad quotes Rush Limbaugh in an insincere attempt to link the firebrand commentator to McCain. Firstly, McCain and Limbaugh have long been at odds on immigration and Latino issues, so the comparison is a false one. Also, Limbaugh's words, while indelicate, are both misquoted and taken out of context - one of the two quotes was obviously spoken in ...
