EPA's Lisa Jackson Cancels Fundraiser Appearance Amid Oil Spill Criticism

Hours after news broke that EPA Administrator Lisa Jackson would attend a fundraising event next week in New York, her office abruptly reversed the decision, saying she would be unable to attend because "her priority has continued to be protecting human health and the environment." Jackson had been invited to the Manhattan event, a Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee (DSCC) breakfast fundraiser, on March 12, and her office noted this fact -- that her acceptance of the invitation predated the BP oil spill by many weeks. Jackson was reportedly en route to Washington from the Gulf Coast ...

Obama Aide: No New Drilling Until Oil Rig Blast Explained

With reports that floating oil from a huge spill in the Gulf of Mexico has reached Louisiana shores, a top aide to President Obama said Friday no "additional drilling" for offshore oil will be approved until investigators determine what caused the recent explosion on a deep water rig. In late March, Obama lifted a decades-old moratorium on oil drilling off the mid- and south-Atlantic coasts, areas in the Gulf not currently leased, and in waters off Alaska. But no new leases have been granted as yet, and White House adviser David Axelrod said "none will until we find out what has happened ...

EPA to Toughen Drinking Water Standards

EPA to Toughen Drinking Water Standards

Drinking water standards would be tightened to limit cancer-causing contaminants under new rules proposed by the Environmental Protection Agency. Administrator Lisa Jackson said Monday the EPA will issue stricter regulations on four chemical compounds within the next year, The Associated Press reported. Two of the compounds (tetrachloroethylene and trichloroethylene) are used in industrial and textile processing and can seep into drinking water from contaminated groundwater or surface water. The two others (acrylamide and epichlorohydrin) are impurities that can be introduced into drinking ...

James Inhofe to EPA Chief: 'I Really Like You,' but Global Warming Is a 'Hoax'

Sen. James Inhofe (R-Okla.), the famous global warming skeptic and top Republican on the Senate's Environment and Public Works Committee, took a moment to warm relations with EPA Administrator Lisa Jackson at an EPW hearing on the EPA's budget Tuesday. "I'm going to say in front of all these people: I really do like you," Inhofe said to Jackson, who smiled at the apparently sincere compliment. "We've spent time in my office, we've talked about our kids and all that, and I just say that from my heart and I want you to know that that's true." Inhofe also praised Jackson for her work cleaning ...

With Eyes on Climate Talks, EPA Makes Its Move

WASHINGTON (Dec. 7) -- The Environmental Protection Agency sparked news bulletins and front-page headlines around the Web on Monday for saying that carbon dioxide poses a danger to public health. The statement, however, is hardly surprising. President Barack Obama has been saying much the same thing since his first days in the Senate, and the EPA telegraphed its finding back in April. The significance of Monday's announcement is all about its timing. Coming as world leaders gather in Copenhagen for their much-anticipated climate change summit, the EPA decision signals to the global community ...

E.P.A. Rules Greenhouse Gases Dangerous, Sets Up Carbon Regulation

At a press event Monday afternoon in Washington, the Environmental Protection Agency announced that it has ruled greenhouse gases are a threat to public health, opening the door for the regulation of carbon emissions from automobiles, power plants, and other sources. "These long-overdue findings cement 2009's place in history as the year when the United States government began addressing the challenge of greenhouse-gas pollution and seizing the opportunity of clean-energy reform," said EPA Administrator Lisa P. Jackson. "This continues our work towards clean energy reform that will cut GHGs ...

EPA Chief Lisa Jackson Links Civil Rights and Environmental Justice

TAMPA, Fla. -- OK, the unemployment rate for July fell to 9.4 percent, down from 9.5 percent in June, according to reports from the Labor Department on Friday. While it's the first decrease since early 2008, 247,000 jobs were still lost nationwide in July. At the same time, the course of the economy is still in question, and the debate over the health care package is causing rifts all over America. So how does the leader of the Environmental Protection Agency get people to focus on the environment? By showing how all these issues are related. ...
