Islamic Center's Bid for Federal Funds Draws Fire

(Nov. 23) --The developers of a proposed Islamic community center and mosque near ground zero are seeking federal redevelopment grants reportedly worth $5 million, further infuriating some families and first responders. "I think it's an insult to the 9/11 families. It's another smack in the face," retired Deputy Fire Chief Jim Riches, who lost a firefighter son during the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, told the Daily News. "Why would we give them money ahead of so many other worthy groups?" Tim Brown, a retired firefighter who was a first responder on 9/11, told the New York Post. SOMA ...

Opinion: What Happens to Guantanamo, KSM Now?

(Nov. 9) -- If President Barack Obama thought emptying Guantanamo and trying terrorists in civilian courts was tough before, he hasn't seen anything yet. In one of the first acts of his new administration, President Barack Obama signed an executive order calling for closing the much ballyhooed detention center at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, within a year. Guantanamo TimelineJan. 22, 2009: President Obama signs executive order to close the Guantanamo Bay detention center within a year. Military-Grade Explosives Found at NYC Cemetery

(Oct. 11) -- A volunteer reported today that a garbage bag full of powerful C-4 explosives had been found at a historic cemetery in New York City, setting off a major police response, officials said. New York Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly said the bomb squad was sent this morning to the Marble Cemetery on East Second Street in the East Village in lower Manhattan, where police found at least six bricks of C-4, a military-grade explosive often used to rip apart walls. The plastic explosives were missing the blasting caps needed to trigger an explosion, so the bricks could not have ...

Did Park51 Islamic Center Design Sketches Win Over New Yorkers?

(Oct. 4) -- Developers of the controversial Park51 Islamic center near Manhattan's ground zero recently received their first taste of reactions to the actual look of their proposed building, following the release of the first official architectural renderings on the project's blog last week. The unifying potential in a strong design must not be underestimated. Paul Gunther, president of the Institute of Classical Architecture & Classical America, recently wrote that "a great design would help Park51 transcend cultural borders." "[A great design] is what is called for today, whether through ...

Donald Trump Tries, Fails to Buy 'Ground Zero Mosque'

(Sept. 9) -- He can't fire the so-called ground zero mosque, after all. Donald Trump's publicist announced today that the real estate magnate and television reality-show host was prepared to buy out the controlling investor in the controversial Islamic cultural center in lower Manhattan that has become commonly known as the ground zero mosque, but is officially called Park51. According to The Wall Street Journal, Trump informed Hisham Elzanaty of his decision to offer him cash for his stake in the project so that it could be relocated to a part of the city that is farther from the site of ...

Petraeus: Quran Burning Could Endanger US Troops

(Sept. 6) -- Throughout history, whenever books have been set on fire, passions have been unleashed. In Gainesville, Fla., a pastor's plan to hold a public burning of Qurans to mark the ninth anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks has already set off angry protests from Afghanistan to Indonesia and elicited a formal response from the U.S. Embassy condemning the plan. Now, the book burning has another high-profile foe: Gen. David Petraeus, the commander of American forces fighting in that country. "It could endanger troops and it could endanger the overall effort," Petraeus told The Wall ...

Do 3 Anti-Muslim Incidents in the Past Week Indicate Growing 'Islamophobia'?

(Aug. 26) -- The stabbing of a Muslim cab driver in New York City was just the latest case: Three apparently religiously motivated incidents in the past week have some worried about a growing trend of violent "Islamophobia" -- prejudice against Muslims -- in the U.S. "It's absolutely clear that anti-Muslim bigotry is going through the roof," Ibrahim Hooper, the national communications director for the Council of American Islamic Relations, told Surge Desk. In the past several days, anyway, examples of what CAIR terms "growing anti-Muslim bigotry" have certainly, and unfortunately, ...

Is It Too Late for the Pro-Mosque Movement?

(Aug 25) -- Groups supporting the Park51 Islamic Cultural Center, which most Americans say shouldn't be built as planned some 300 yards from ground zero, announced today an initiative to better make their case, but admitted they face an uphill battle to eclipse the mosque opponents who dominate the debate. "Maybe we're too late, maybe we're slow and democratic, but we're definitely changing things around," said the Rev. Donna Schaper, senior minister at Judson Memorial Church in Manhattan's Greenwich Village. "People who are creating this mass hysteria and manipulating the American people ...

Muslim Cabbie Stabbing: Mosque Madness Blowback?

(Aug. 25) -- A New York man has been charged with attempted murder as a hate crime for "slashing" a cab driver with a knife "across the neck, and then on the face from his nose to his upper lip." The man, 21-year-old Michael Enright, was visibly drunk. Police say he asked the driver if he was Muslim and, some time after the driver answered yes, attacked the driver while shouting, "Assalamu alaikum -- consider this a checkpoint!" The driver, 43-year-old Ahmed Sharif, escaped and flagged down a police car. Sharif was taken to the hospital and is reportedly in stable condition. Some observers, ...
