Dorothy Robb shared her 100th birthday party with 14 college guys. The centenarian from Plainfield, Ind., has been rooting for Butler University's basketball team since she was a Bulldog co-ed in the early 1930s. Robb turned 100 on March 20, the day after No. 8 seed Butler squeaked to victory over No. 1 seed Pittsburgh with a free throw sunk by Matt Howard with less than a second on the clock. Robb's alma mater in Indianapolis sent her a Bulldogs scarf, and Robb informed her birthday party guests they were to celebrate not only her centennial, but her team's ascent as well. When Robb first ...
Barack Obama has always been a high achiever, and he's living up to that standard with his "March Madness" picks. After the first three rounds of the NCAA Tournament, the president ranks in the 99th percentile, according to ESPN.com. Alas, that's down a notch from his standing after the second round ended Friday: He was in the 100th percentile then, tied for 492nd out of 5,923,829 submitted brackets to ESPN. According to the Hill, Obama also leads a tournament pool featuring members of Congress. Based on a point-tallying system designed by Yahoo.com, the president's score of 49 (out of a ...
Newt Gingrich says President Obama is acting like the "spectator in chief instead of the commander in chief." Appearing on Fox News Thursday night, the former House speaker and presumed 2012 GOP presidential contender told Sean Hannity: "Yes, the administration has just sort of checked out. You know, the president has this fixation with the Final Four -- spent time on ESPN giving us his version of what really mattered to him, which was the Final Four," said Gingrich. Obama, said Gingrich, "may be the most out-of-touch president in modern American history." Related ...
For the third year in a row, President Obama filled out his "March Madness" bracket on ESPN, but this time he's taking some heavy criticism -- and not for his picks. On Twitter, Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus took the first shot: "How can @BarackObama say he is leading when [he] puts his NCAA bracket over the budget & other pressing issues?" Citing crises ranging from the multiple disasters in Japan to unrest in the Middle East and the budget deadlock in Congress, RNC spokeswoman Kirsten Kukowski said Wednesday, "With all of those pressing issues on the president's ...
March Madness officially begins Sunday with the announcement of the selection of the 68 teams appearing in this year's NCAA basketball tournament. Even more important to those with office pools, the bracket pairings will also be revealed. High school tournaments already are in full swing across the nation. So cheers to all the teams and their fans for the victories that got them to the next level. But as I was researching my biography on one of Kentucky's most colorful characters, former high school coach Jock Sutherland ("JOCK: A Coach's Story," Wind Publications), I was reminded that the ...
I don't remember for the life of me if the farmer and cowhand ended up being friends -- it seems like they had a lot in common -- but certainly, division and debate are as ingrained in human nature as mud and honesty. And, since it's virtually impossible to debate the NCAA Tournament, which pleases viewers most when it defies all logic, invariably each year March dredges up a good old-fashioned NBA/NCAA debate. Like most territorial squabbles, it's always difficult to ascertain who fires the first shot. But when you've got ESPN writers comparing some upset to the passage of health care and ...
How quickly the tables turn, Mr. President.Just two days ago, the nation was locked in recession, North Korea was plotting a missile launch, Flo Rida topped the Billboard charts, and you were in the thick of the race for NCAA bracket glory.Well, actually all of those things are exactly the same today. Except that your bracket is down to one remaining team... It's North Carolina or nothing for U.S. President Barack Obama. The president went 1-for-4 on Final Four teams in his NCAA tournament bracket, hitting with the Tar Heels but losing with Louisville on Sunday. The split left Obama in the ...
We have now made it through the Sweet 16 of the NCAA men's basketball tournament, and President Obama has correctly picked 53.91% of the winners-- a number that comes within a point of his popular vote percentage on election night. This stunning similarity can owe to one thing and one thing only: It's an unremarkable coincidence. Now it's time to analyze the president's Sweet 16 results, as is our tradition in this ongoing series: Score Did Obama Get It Right? Implications Michigan St. 67- Kansas 62 Yes Obama bets against the state of his mother's ...
In this latest installment of our ongoing investigative series on President Obama's NCAA Bracket, we bring good news for the commander in chief. After spending the opening round playing to swing states and slumping like Tom Tancredo's presidential campaign, the president staged a good old-fashioned rally over the weekend... Louisville made quite a rally. President Barack Obama did, too. The president's NCAA tournament bracket looked a lot better Sunday when he correctly picked 14 of the 16 teams to reach the regional semifinals. After the first round, Obama ranked in the bottom 5 percent of ...
