Scott Brown Says He'll Vote 'No' on Wall St. Reform

The prospect for passage of the financial reform bill just got dimmer. Massachusetts Sen. Scott Brown announced today he will now vote against the bill because of its so-called "bank tax" provision. Brown had originally voted in favor of the bill. In a letter to the Senate Banking Committee chairman, Brown stated, "I am writing you to express my strong opposition to the $19 billion bank tax that was included in the financial reform bill during the conference committee. The tax was not in the Senate version of the bill, which I supported. If the final version of the bill contains these ...

Wall Street Reform Stalled Again in Senate

The marathon Senate debate on a bill tightening the regulation of financial markets is likely to roll along for at least several more days as support among Democrats has fractured -- at least temporarily. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid had hoped to wrap the bill up this week but he fell three votes short Wednesday on a procedural attempt meant to cut off debate and move toward final passage. Two Democrats, Maria Cantwell of Washington and Russ Feingold of Wisconsin, defected ship even as Reid got help from two moderate Republicans. Cantwell was apparently miffed because a vote was not ...

A bid to close debate failed today when the measure's backers couldn't muster the 60-vote majority needed to set up a final tally on the legislation aimed at preventing future financial crises. The 57-42 vote found all but two Republicans against the cloture motion, something Majority Leader Harry Reid was quick to point out. "I've never seen a party so consistently and passionately defend special interests," ...

Shouldn't War Top Amanda Knox on Our Most-Read List?

I was shocked to learn that four of the top-ten-most-read stories in Time magazine this week were about Tiger Woods and Amanda Knox. Although I have followed Tiger's career since 1997, when he burst on the golf scene, until last week, I had never heard of Amanda Knox. As I now know, Knox is a 22-year-old American exchange student who an Italian jury last Friday found guilty of murdering her British roommate two years earlier. A closer look at the most-read list showed just one serious topic –- the discovery of a planet-like object. Nowhere to be found on the list were articles about ...
