Marine Who Campaigned for Veterans Takes His Own Life

Like the Marine he was, Clay Hunt launched a front-line assault against the demons he brought home from Iraq and Afghanistan. The 28-year-old Texan, who suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder, appeared in a suicide prevention campaign encouraging returning veterans to reach out for help. He went to Washington, D.C., to speak out for veterans' rights. He also built bikes for a rehabilitation program for injured vets and traveled to disaster-ravaged countries to provide humanitarian aid. Top Marine Says DADT Repeal Won't Lead to Exodus in Force

WASHINGTON -- The Marine Corps commandant who once said openly gay service members would be a dangerous "distraction" and was among the most outspoken opponents of repealing the military's "don't ask, don't tell" policy said today he does not expect to lose troops over the change. "I haven't had any indication yet at all, not at all," Gen. James Amos told reporters when asked if he expected the mass exodus of troops that Sen. John McCain and other critics predicted if the ban was lifted. Amos was visiting troops in Afghanistan's Helmand Province when President Barack Obama signed the repeal ...

Report: Marine Corps Delayed 'Urgently Needed' Laser Weapon

Report: Marine Corps Delayed 'Urgently Needed' Laser Weapon

The military needlessly delayed by six months an urgently needed, nonlethal laser weapon that could have saved the lives of U.S. Marines and Iraqi civilians, according to a report released today by the Pentagon's inspector general. "Delays left Marines deployed to Iraq in 2006 without a critical nonlethal weapon to more effectively perform security missions for nearly 6 months," Richard Jolliffe, the assistant inspector general, wrote in a memo accompanying the main report, which examines the Marines' effort to procure the lasers. The problem dates back to a 2005 request by the 2nd Marine ...

Report: US Sending 1,400 More Troops to Afghanistan

The U.S. is sending 1,400 more Marines into Afghanistan ahead of a spring thaw, when fighting usually picks up with the Taliban, to try to cement security gains ahead of the July start of a U.S. troop withdrawal, according to a published report. Unidentified American officials told The Wall Street Journal that Defense Secretary Robert Gates ordered the new deployment of more Marine combat forces in a surprise move on Wednesday. Temporarily adding front-line forces could help counter an anticipated spring offensive by Taliban militants returning from havens in neighboring Pakistan, they ...

Busy With Afghanistan, the U.S. Military Has No Time to Train for Big Wars

Busy With Afghanistan, the U.S. Military Has No Time to Train for Big Wars

We have learned through painful experience that the wars we fight are seldom the wars we planned. -- Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates, Feb. 1, 2010 Just after a cold, rainy dawn, a U.S. Army battalion under the command of Lt. Col. Charles B. Smith took up positions along a low Korean ridgeline with orders to stop the enemy tank columns racing toward them. The Americans were lightly armed draftees assigned to peacetime occupation duties in Japan. They'd never trained for major combat. But they wore the uniform of the most powerful nation on earth. They expected a short skirmish: When the ...

Gay Vets Seek to Re-Enlist in Military

Gay Vets Seek to Re-Enlist in Military

(Oct. 20) -- "I passed." That's what gay Iraq war veteran Dan Choi announced today on his Twitter page after taking the skills test to re-enlist in the Army. Choi, who came out on national TV and then handcuffed himself to the White House fence to protest the "don't ask, don't tell" policy, is one of at least three gay veterans seeking to re-enlist. Last month, a federal judge issued an injunction suspending enforcement of the law that bars anyone from serving in uniform if they're openly gay. On Tuesday, recruiters for the U.S. military were told to begin accepting applications from openly ...

Stewart, Colbert Rallies Looking for a Few Good Porta-Potties

(Oct. 7) -- The Marine Corps Marathon has a lock on the portable toilets on the National Mall. Literally. Organizers of the 26.2-mile event have made it clear that they won't share their portable facilities with participants from Comedy Central's Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert rallies. Indeed, the Marines plan to put padlocks on their 800 Porta-Potties later this month, as both marathon runners and political naysayers descend on the Mall over Halloween weekend. "We've paid for 'em. They're already there for our race, our event. We've taken care of our event, and our event is very separate ...

Marines Tackle Record-High Number of Suicides

Marines Tackle Record-High Number of Suicides

(Sept. 10) -- The U.S Marines, like other branches of the American military, are facing unprecedented levels of both suicides and suicide attempts. Now, the corps is rolling out a comprehensive prevention program that aims to address mental health problems from inside their own ranks. A total of 52 Marines committed suicide last year, and another 154 made attempts. Both figures are the highest on record for the corps, and they even exceed those of other services, including the Army and the Air Force. Now, the Marine motto "leave no man behind" is going to be applied to suicide prevention. ...

The Few. The Proud. The New Marines?

The Few. The Proud. The New Marines?

WASHINGTON (Aug. 13) -- Declaring "the maritime soul of the Marine Corps" is at stake, Defense Secretary Robert Gates has ordered a review of the seaborne service that since 9/11 has functioned more like a "second land army." In a speech in San Francisco, Gates spoke of "anxiety" over the future role of the service after nearly a decade of fighting on land in Afghanistan and Iraq. He said some feel the Corps has "become too heavy, too removed from their expeditionary, amphibious roots and the unique skill sets those missions require." Though many Marines are battle-tested, some "may never ...
