Chris Lee and 3 Other Politicians Stung by Technology

For politicians in the digital age, going viral can prove to be either a sign of success or a warning that a career is about to end. Rep. Chris Lee discovered the latter today after exchanges with a woman he met on Craigslist, including a photo of himself bare-chested, were published by Gawker. The viral storm that ensued was so great that, hours after the story broke, Lee resigned from office. But Lee is not the first politician to be felled by an encounter with technology. Though Surge Desk realizes that computers, camcorders, cell phones and the like are merely a means to an end, and not ...

What Ever Happened to ... Mark Foley?

What Ever Happened to ... Mark Foley?

(March 1) -- Former Rep. Mark Foley has nearly vanished in the mist of distant Washington scandals. But back in the fall of 2006, the Florida Republican's resignation amid charges of sending suggestive e-mails and instant messages to young male House pages was the talk of Capitol Hill and fodder for plenty of jokes on late-night TV. Foley went home to West Palm Beach and kept a relatively low profile, although he did start hosting a weekly hourlong radio show called "Inside the Mind of Mark Foley" on WSVU last September. Now, the ex-lawmaker has launched a new career: consignment shop ...

Mark Foley: 'Inappropriate' to Comment on 'Conduct' of Max Baucus

Former Republican Rep. Mark Foley of Florida Tuesday had second thoughts about the propriety of his accusation that Sen. Max Baucus, a Montana Democrat, was inebriated while speaking on the Senate floor about health care on December 22. A video appears to show Baucus slurring his words, repeating sentences, and gesticulating widely in his address (click play below to watch). Baucus has not commented publicly on the accusation, but his spokesman, Tyler Matsdorf, released a statement calling the accusation "beyond the pale," adding: "what is even more sad is that such a personal attack would ...

Mark Foley Accuses Max Baucus of Delivering Senate Speech Drunk

Sen. Max Baucus' spokesman released a statement Monday responding to an accusation by a former Republican congressman that Baucus was intoxicated when he gave a floor speech Dec. 22. Tyler Matsdorf, spokesman for the Montana Democrat, asked that the statement be carried in full, which it is here: "When his friend of 30 years Ted Kennedy, with whom he had fought so hard to provide health care to children, was being used as a cheap foil to oppose health care reform, Senator Baucus gave a passionate defense. Unfortunately, those who want to kill any meaningful reform, turned it into an ...

The Return of Mark Foley

The Return of Mark Foley

Like a bleak, needy Instant Message that pops up at 2am, he's back. Mark Foley--the disgraced Republican Congressman who resigned over a string of sexually explicit e-mails sent to 16-year-old male interns--recently sat down with AP reporter Brian Skoloff to talk about, among other things, the possibility of a having a "hospital, a bridge or a post office" named after him. He also wanted some closure. "I believed I owed my constituents an apology," he said. "I embarrassed them and I embarrassed my family and I wanted to have a chance in a public setting to lend my voice to what happened." ...

Emanuel Saved Page Scandal for Political Gain

Emanuel Saved Page Scandal for Political Gain

President-elect Barack Obama's campaign image of bipartisanship is being tested with the very first staff selection he has made since winning the election. Obama's pick to be White House Chief of Staff, Illinois Congressman Rahm Emanuel, is known as a hyper-partisan, sharp-elbowed, and aggressive political operator. Evidence of that can be seen in the way Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee handled information it received about the House page scandal, which broke before the 2006 elections and helped Democrats take control of the House. The DCCC possessed information that a lawmaker was ...

Politicians: How Much is TMI?

Politicians: How Much is TMI?

Newly inaugurated NY Governor David Paterson, who has already to admitted to affairs and cocaine use, held a press conference today and told the gathered, "I think that, more than any elected official on the planet and probably in outer space, I have discussed my personal situation over the last week" and that there would be no more press conferences about his private life. I'm not a New Yorker and certainly don't know the governor, but somehow I don't believe that this will not be the last we hear from Paterson regarding his personal life. Call me cynical... Well, New York Magazine has made ...

Spitzer Can't Touch Mark Foley

Spitzer Can't Touch Mark Foley

When the dust settled from the Texas, Ohio, Rhode Island and Vermont presidential primaries, the political beat faced a dreary seven-week period until the next contest. To bide their time, did veteran reporters pray for increased debate among the candidates, new and exciting endorsements, or maybe a string of inflammatory campaign ads? No. They prayed for this. They prayed for Gov. Eliot Spitzer and Emperors Club V.I.P.As The New York Times points out, political sex scandals are an old story. And Governor Spitzer's scandal--when compared to Gary Condit, Larry Craig and Mark Foley--is probably ...
