'Gang of Six' in Senate Working Behind Scenes on Debt Reduction Plan

'Gang of Six' in Senate Working Behind Scenes on Debt Reduction Plan

While a high-decibel debate on immediate spending cuts rages in the House, a small group of senators that some call the "Gang of Six" is working quietly on a serious long-range plan to reduce the nation's trillion-dollar-plus budget deficits. Taking a cue from the Obama administration deficit-reduction commission, the bipartisan outline calls for higher taxes and across-the-board limits on spending, the Wall Street Journal reports. Although the plan is still in the works, it could surface as early as next month. Related Stories Deficit to Hit $1.5 Trillion in 2011, ...

Deficit Reduction: Democrat Warner, Republican Chambliss Push for Plan

Conservative Republican Saxby Chambliss and moderate Democrat Mark Warner are determined to keep hope alive when it comes to shrinking the nation's budget deficit -- and taking a hard look at the controversial recommendations of the president's deficit-cutting panel. "The way you do it is put everything on the table," Chambliss said last week to reporters from the Washington Post and other news outlets. "It is critically important to get a plan in place in the next 12 months." Warner (D-Va.) and Chambliss (R-Ga.) have formed an ad hoc "working group" that includes at least 20 senators, ...

Americans Want the Bush Tax Cuts Extended, but Differ on Income Limits

Americans Want the Bush Tax Cuts Extended, but Differ on Income Limits

The starting point for President Obama and Democratic leaders in Congress on what to do about the soon-to-expire Bush-era tax cuts had been to extend them for everyone except high-income families earning over $250,000 a year. But as David Leonhardt writes in Wednesday's New York Times, that's no longer much of an option, given the Republicans' new clout on Capitol Hill, and talk has turned to making the income cutoff $1 million or packaging an extension of the cuts for all with other measures that would help the economy such as tax cuts for businesses that added workers. Earlier this month, ...

Obama's First Post-Election Crisis: Will He Go Wobbly on Tax Cuts?

Obama's First Post-Election Crisis: Will He Go Wobbly on Tax Cuts?

The promise dates back to the earliest days of Barack Obama's presidential campaign. "Obama Calls for the Repeal of Bush Tax Cuts" was the headline in the Feb. 22, 2007, Des Moines Register. Speaking to more than 2,000 Iowans at a town hall rally, Obama said, "Some of the tax breaks George Bush gave to the wealthiest Americans, I probably would roll back . . . One of those things that politics is dishonest about is pretending there's a free lunch." Nearly four years later, the president is ensnared by the tax-cut gimmickry of – guess what? – politicians pretending there's a free ...

The Majority of US Senators Are Millionaires

The Majority of US Senators Are Millionaires

(Oct. 28) -- Just in case you thought money doesn't equal power ... More than half of the U.S. senators are millionaires and four more fall just 100 grand short of the million-dollar mark, according to a recent Roll Call analysis. The survey, based on a review of Senate financial disclosure forms filed in 2010, also indicated that the majority of senators saw their fortunes grow during the past year. While many of the senators amassed their wealth through common means, Roll Call actually makes a point of highlighting the recent prevalence of increased wealth by inheritance in the Senate. For ...

Who Has What It Takes to Replace Rahm Emanuel?

Who Has What It Takes to Replace Rahm Emanuel?

WASHINGTON (Sept. 8) -- Let the guessing game begin. The news that Chicago "Mayor for Life" Richard Daley would not run for a seventh term was a shocker. Instant speculation that White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel, a former congressman from Chicago, may step down to run for the job was not. White House spokesman Robert Gibbs hinted that a mayoral run could be in Emanuel's future. "Something like that doesn't come around a lot," Gibbs told reporters, suggesting there could be turnover at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. after the midterm election. Pete Souza, The White House Chief of Staff Rahm ...

Mark Warner Sworn In to the Senate!

Today, January 6, 2009, is a day for the history books. In an event that will be retold countless times to children and grandchildren alike, the Senate swore in a white man from Virginia named Warner. The seat, which hasn't been held by such a demographic since 2008, is just one of nine that are changing hands to start the 111th Congress. In less historic Senate news, today is the first day in the Minnesota race that will pit humorist Al Franken (D-Manhattan) against incumbent Norm Coleman (R-Brooklyn). Now some people out there, including Franken, were under the mistaken impression that the ...

GOP Loves Energy Issue

GOP Loves Energy Issue

the Next Right is on top of the last few days hoorah around Republican and conservative circles. The intense focus on oil, offshore drilling, etc. has moved beyond the usual circles into Evangelical territory: he American Family Association sent out an alert to its massive list and got 400,000 letters sent to Congress for more oil drilling. Why is this important? In presentations, I often cite the AFA's monster list as the biggest on the Right. And in my years on their list, I've never seen them focus on anything other than social issues. Their focus on oil is a big, big deal. It's pretty ...

VA-Sen: Moving Firmly Into the D Column

More bad news for Senate Republicans, as last best hope Tom Davis prepares to announce that he is not running for John Warner's U.S. Senate seat. The move comes after Davis, a moderate Republican who was their best chance to defeat popular former Governor Mark Warner, eyed a landscape unfavorable to his politics. Local Republicans decided to lick their wounds from two unsuccessful Governor campaigns and the loss of a U.S. Senate seat by holding their nomination for Warner's replacement through a convention rather than a primary. The closed convention, likely to be dominated by hard-right party ...
