Gov. Mark Sanford: Did He and Lover Rekindle Flame in Florida?

Gov. Mark Sanford: Did He and Lover Rekindle Flame in Florida?

They're back together, maybe. South Carolina Republican Gov. Mark Sanford told reporters Wednesday he and his Argentine lover reunited last weekend in Florida. The Associated Press reports that Sanford, during a news conference on another matter, said he spent several days with Maria Belen Chapur to see if they could restart their relationship -- a pairing that cost Sanford his marriage and almost got him thrown out of office. He was still married to Jenny Sanford last summer when he disappeared for five days to visit Chapur in South America. Misinformed aides said the governor was hiking the ...

Mark Sanford Avoids Criminal Charges in Use of Jet, Funds

South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford's use of the state aircraft and campaign money for two trips to South America to meet his Argentine lover may have been unwise and unethical. But S.C. Attorney General Henry McMaster on Monday said he would not bring criminal charges. McMaster, a Republican candidate for governor, said the "evidence does not support, beyond a reasonable doubt, that the governor knowingly, willfully and intentionally set out to break state law," The State newspaper reported. In a written statement following the decision, Sanford said: "While I've acknowledged repeatedly my own ...

In Line to See Jenny Sanford: Wronged Wives, Straying Hubby

COLUMBIA, S.C. -- Jenny Sanford, the first lady of South Carolina for now, returned to the capital city on Friday night to sign copies of her book "Staying True." Who would brave an uncharacteristic South Carolina snowstorm for a one-on-one encounter? Someone in the same "personal situation," it turns out. Tarnisha Gibson, a 36-year-old military wife, said that Sanford is "trying to find her independence" after a marriage shaken by infidelity – and so is she. Gibson said of Sanford: "I'm getting advice from her and she doesn't even know it." She and hubby "are working it out" after he ...

Gov. Mark Sanford Chatting Up Congressmen on House Floor

Gov. Mark Sanford Chatting Up Congressmen on House Floor

Republican South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford was on the floor of the House of Representatives Thursday talking to GOP congressmen. As a former member of Congress, Sanford is allowed to visit the chamber at will. Among others, Sanford chatted with Rep. Ron Paul (R-Texas) and Rep. Bill Young (R-Fla.). Sanford has not been seen publicly in Washington, D.C., since the news broke last summer that he lied about his whereabouts to his staff while taking a secret trip to Argentina to meet his lover, Maria Belen Chapur. Sanford's estranged wife, Jenny Sanford, has written a book about her marriage which ...

Jenny Sanford's Rare Path to Divorce

Jenny Sanford's Rare Path to Divorce

(Dec. 11) -- When South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford tearfully admitted at a news conference in June that he had been having an affair, it was the same old story of a politician's fall from grace due to sexual impropriety. The governor apologized to everyone imaginable, praised his wife for standing by him through thick and thin, and invoked his faith in God. But this classic tale had one twist: His wife, Jenny, was not standing dutifully at his side. In fact, Mrs. Sanford had taken their four sons and moved out two weeks before. Six months later, she made a rare decision for wives of ...

South Carolina Governor Dodges Impeachment

(Dec. 10) -- What does a politician have to do these days to get booted out of office? Apparently, more than what South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford did. After tearfully admitting an affair with a woman in Argentina, Sanford was accused of dozens of ethics violations involving his travel and use of campaign funds. Through the summer, the man once touted as a 2012 Republican presidential contender faced mounting calls from lawmakers in both parties to resign. Getty ImagesSouth Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford wept at a June 24 news conference as he admitted having an affair. But on Wednesday, a ...

Tiger Woods' Transgressions and the Gender Split

Tiger Woods' Transgressions and the Gender Split

A businessman friend in his 40s told me at lunch yesterday that he's noticed a slight frisson of gender tension among the married couples he knows over the tawdry Tiger two-timing. As I understand the rift, wives think Tiger Woods is "a dog," while husbands more often view his behavior as merely "weak." They defend him at their peril. My married nephew told me in his circle of 30-somethings, when men are going to TRY and defend Tiger, they do it around other men. "You have to be aware of your surroundings." In a 1997 episode of "Friends," Chandler explained he and Monica had "a deal where we ...

Mark Sanford Tries to Block Release of Ethics Report

Mark Sanford Tries to Block Release of Ethics Report

South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford, who has been fighting calls for his resignation ever since his affair with an Argentine woman earlier this year, has asked the state's Supreme Court to block release of the results of a state ethics investigation, according to The State newspaper. Sanford believes the ethics investigation, if released to lawmakers, could arm his opponents and intensify the electorate's opposition to him remaining as governor. "Sanford argues that only prosecutorial bodies can gain access to the State Ethics Commission's preliminary report, which is akin to an indictment and ...

Embattled Sanford Fends Off Calls for Resignation

In his first interview since revealing his globe-trotting extramarital affair, South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford said that he will not "crawl into a cave" but will fight to hold onto his job in the face of mounting opposition. "I have a newfound level of humility, knowing how hard I work and how hard I push is not the ultimate driver of change," he told the Wall Street Journal on Monday. Sanford added that his opponents "smell blood in the water" and are trying to capitalize on his indiscretions. Sanford has faced a daily deluge of calls for his resignation, including several from his ...

Jenny Sanford Explains Away Her Husband's Affair

Jenny Sanford Explains Away Her Husband's Affair

After remaining relatively quiet on the subject of her husband's affair, Jenny Sanford offers an opinion on why her marriage unraveled in the pages of Vogue, as Bonnie Goldstein points out. I have to admit, though, seeing the fashion magazine label Sanford as an "unlikely heroine" for handling the affair gracefully left me feeling a little troubled -- and a little less optimistic about Sanford's future than my colleagues are. ...
