Coast Guard Looks for 6 Missing NJ Sport-Fishermen

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. (Oct. 11) -- Six New Jersey men failed to return from a weekend overnight fishing trip, and the Coast Guard was searching for their sport-fishing boat Monday off the coast of Massachusetts, where they might have issued a mayday call. Thomas McDade said his father, Geoffrey, and 26-year-old brother, James, were among the group that left Saturday morning on a trip to catch tuna about 85 miles east of Atlantic City. They were to return Sunday morning and when they weren't home by the evening, Thomas McDade said his mother called authorities. The search for the 32-foot ...

Opinion: A Welcome End to the Summer of Hate

(Aug. 30) -- As summer vacation comes to a close let me see if I can help you catch up on some of the news you might have missed in the dog days of August. For starters, if you have been lucky enough to tune it all out, you need to know Americans are barking -- loudly -- at each other. Mosque or no mosque? That is the question as a Brooklyn-born developer who already owns the old Burlington Coat Factory, two and a half blocks north of the former World Trade Center site, says he wants to convert it into a community center with a swimming pool, gymnasium, meeting rooms and yes, prayer space for ...

The Obama Family Vacation: Scrabble With Valerie Jarrett, Reading Jonathan Franzen

The Obama Family Vacation: Scrabble With Valerie Jarrett, Reading Jonathan Franzen

For those hoping for a glimpse of the first family on vacation in Martha's Vineyard this week, the photo ops have been nearly non-existent -- except for island locals who've had their camera phones at the ready. But the White House knows well that images of the first family on vacation at the 28-acre Blue Heron Farm, complete with its own putting range, private beach, basketball court and swimming pool -- rented for an estimated wallet-stinging $35,000 to $50,000 per week -- might not play so well at a time when the U.S. housing market has seen steep drops, and the unemployment rate remains ...

Obama 'Having a Great Time' on Vacation; Twitter Not So Pleased

Obama 'Having a Great Time' on Vacation; Twitter Not So Pleased

(Aug. 25) -- How is President Barack Obama enjoying the rainy weather during his vacation at Martha's Vineyard this week? "I'm having a great time," he told reporters on Tuesday night, according to ABC News senior White House correspondent Jake Tapper. A day later, the quote became a lightning rod for conservatives and Obama critics around the Web. Someone over at The Drudge Report featured it prominently on the site's infamously low-budget home page, and a deluge of angry tweets soon followed. That kind of adverse reaction, in and of itself, is hardly surprising. As a recent New York ...

Obamas Take a Beach Lunch on Second Vacation Day

EDGARTOWN, Mass. (Aug. 21) - President Barack Obama enjoyed a picnic lunch with the first family while on vacation Saturday. The president, first lady Michelle Obama and daughters Malia and Sasha took about a 10-minute ride from their Martha's Vineyard vacation home to a private beach where aides said they planned to picnic. The family was not seen by the White House press corps, but clusters of well-wishers waved to them as they passed a bustling farmer's market and several crowded intersections en route. Carolyn Kaster, AP President Barack Obama and his daughters Malia and Sasha leave the ...

Has the White House Gone Tone Deaf?

Has the White House Gone Tone Deaf?

On Tuesday, White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs wondered aloud (and in print) whether members of the "professional left" -- critical of the Obama administration for not having done enough to advance their agenda -- might perhaps be dipping into a stash of ganja, or happy pills, or both. "I mean, it's crazy," Gibbs said. "Those people ought to be drug tested." Those kooky outraged liberal naysayers, according to Gibbs, would only be satisfied with Dennis Kucinich installed as commander in chief and Canadian-style (shhh, that's code for "socialist") health care. Personal *relaxation* ...

Obamas Will Vacation on Martha's Vineyard, White House Confirms

The White House on Friday confirmed a Politics Daily report from last week that the First Family will vacation next month in Martha's Vineyard, and paired the announcement with a reminder that the Obamas will travel to Florida's Gulf Coast on Aug. 14. The location of the weekend Florida Gulf Coast visit has not been announced. The return to Martha's Vineyard -- the family vacationed there last year -- will be for ten days starting Aug. 19, returning to Washington on Aug. 29. Earlier this month, the First Couple had been criticized by some for asking people to vacation on the parts of the ...

Malia Obama Going to Overnight Camp For First Time

Malia Obama Going to Overnight Camp For First Time

Malia Obama will soon be going to overnight camp, for the first time. Malia, who turned 12 on July 4, is enjoying a long Maine weekend, hanging out with her family at a pool and playing some tennis. But sometime between sightseeing at Acadia National Park and an expected August vacation at Martha's Vineyard, Malia will be off to camp -- location, so far undisclosed, a secret that may be guarded as close as details of Chelsea Clinton's wedding. The source on the Malia camp plan is at the highest levels of government -- President Obama. On Thursday, he told NBC's Chuck Todd that Malia, his ...

What If Chelsea Clinton's Wedding Isn't in Rhinebeck?

What If Chelsea Clinton's Wedding Isn't in Rhinebeck?

(July 16) -- If Chelsea Clinton is getting married in Rhinebeck, N.Y., in two weeks, few people in the Hudson River town seem to know much about it. So says The Wall Street Journal, which reports today that some residents think the daughter of the former president might be saying "I do" to Marc Mezvinsky somewhere else. Evan Agostini, AP Chelsea Clinton became engaged to longtime love Marc Mezvinsky last year. The mayor told the Journal he hasn't been contacted by the Clinton camp or its wedding planners for any July 31 event. The owner of the inn where guests were thought to be staying ...

First Family Likely Heading to Martha's Vineyard Again for Vacation

In the wake of the BP oil spill, both President Obama and First Lady Michelle have made separate trips to Florida to encourage tourists to visit -- with Mrs. Obama delivering a speech Tuesday on a still pristine beach. For their own vacations, the First Family is heading to Maine this weekend and likely will return to Martha's Vineyard for an extended stay in August. The Obamas arrived Friday at Mount Desert Island, home of Acadia National Park, with the family flying to the Bar Harbor Airport. They return to Washington on Sunday. White House press secretary Robert Gibbs was asked at ...
