As Oil Slathers Gulf Coast, Louisianans Say Drilling Must Go On

On the same day that the federal government doubled its estimate of oil flowing into the Gulf of Mexico to 1.2 million gallons per day, local leaders in Louisiana -- the state most devastated by the BP spill so far -- demanded that drilling in the deep waters off the Louisiana coast continue. "Our bottom line is that we absolutely want drilling to be done safely, but it shouldn't take months of federal government committees and meetings," Gov. Bobby Jindal told reporters Thursday. Jindal's comments came in response to the Obama administration's recent decision to halt all deepwater oil ...

Louisiana Oil Spill, Day 34: Anger Mounts as Cleanup Lags

NEW ORLEANS -- Thirty-four days after the Deepwater Horizon explosion, Louisiana officials have lost patience with BP, the Coast Guard and the Army Corps of Engineers. "I don't have a crystal ball," said Craig Taffaro, St. Bernard Parish president. "But if I were a betting man, I would be betting that [BP's] plan is to let us die, then come back and do $75 million of cleanup, then close the book." That sum -- $75 million -- is the federally mandated cap for oil-spill clean-up expenditure. BP has promised to address the long-term needs of everyone affected by the spill, especially commercial ...

Mary Landrieu Defends 'Louisiana Purchase'

Mary Landrieu Defends 'Louisiana Purchase'

Sen. Mary Landrieu (D-La.) gave an impassioned speech on the Senate floor Thursday, defending the deal she struck during the health care negotiations to send $300 million in additional Medicaid funding to Louisiana. Because of the emergency federal aid that flowed into the state following Hurricanes Katrina, Rita, Ike and Gustav, a federal formula showed the state as wealthier than it really was and drastically reduced the amount of funding it receives through the Medicaid formula. A fix to the formula was included in the health care bill just before the Senate vote, but the addition was ...

O'Keefe Defends Himself in First Interview Since Arrest

(Feb. 2) -- Conservative activist James O'Keefe calls his arrest after an incident at a U.S. senator's office "a huge misunderstanding." He appeared on Sean Hannity's Fox News show Monday night for his first interview since being busted along with three companions. O'Keefe -- whose hidden-camera videos embarrassed ACORN last year -- admitted they posed as telephone repairmen at Sen. Mary Landrieu's New Orleans office last week. He said they were checking out reports that the office wasn't answering calls from constituents who oppose health care reform. O'Keefe repeatedly said investigative ...

Between the Lines: The James O'Keefe Criminal Complaint

Today we introduce a regular feature of PD Investigations, in which we read between the lines of news stories by dissecting the public documents, reports, e-mails, contracts and the other written ephemera that underlie them. Monday night, Fox News Channel's "Hannity" featured the first post-arrest interview given by one of the defendants charged last week in New Orleans with "entering federal property under false pretenses for the purpose of committing a felony." The affidavit below, sworn to by FBI special agent Steven Rayes, was filed Jan. 25 with the innocuous heading "USA v. Flanagan et ...

4 Men Allegedly Tried to Infiltrate Senator's Office

NEW ORLEANS (Jan. 27) -- The four men accused of trying to tamper with Democratic U.S. Sen. Mary Landrieu's office phones share a common experience as young ideologues writing for conservative publications. Federal authorities said two of the men posed as telephone workers wearing hard hats, tool belts and flourescent vests when they walked into the senator's office inside a federal building in New Orleans on Monday. The other two were accused of helping to organize the plan. The most well-known of the suspects is James O'Keefe, a 25-year-old whose hidden-camera expose posing as a pimp with ...

Senate Passes Sweeping Health Care Reform, but Trouble Lies Ahead

After nearly a year of negotiations, concessions, fits and starts, the U.S. Senate passed sweeping health care reform legislation in an early-morning vote Thursday, by a party-line tally of 60 to 39. The Christmas Eve vote was the first on record for the Senate in nearly a century, and marked the end of a grueling work session for the lawmakers, who had plowed through three working weekends since Thanksgiving, often voting into the early morning hours, to meet Majority Leader Harry Reid's goal of passing a health bill before Christmas. Before senators cast their votes Thursday morning, ...
