Toxic Chemicals Injected Into Wells, Democratic Report Says

WASHINGTON -- Millions of gallons of potentially hazardous chemicals and known carcinogens were injected into wells by leading oil and gas service companies from 2005-2009, a report by three House Democrats said Saturday. The report said 29 of the chemicals injected were known-or-suspected human carcinogens. They either were regulated under the Safe Drinking Water Act as risks to human health or listed as hazardous air pollutants under the Clean Air Act. Methanol was the most widely used chemical. The substance is a hazardous air pollutant and is on the candidate list for potential ...

Nearly 68 years after a Massachusetts airman took off on a reconnaissance flight over the South Pacific during World War II, his remains have been found and are en route home to America for burial with full military honors. U.S. Army Air Force 2nd Lt. Martin Murray was piloting a B-24D Liberator plane that took off from an airfield on the island of New Guinea on Oct. 27, 1943, with 11 other crewmen aboard. He was flying a reconnaissance mission over shipping lanes in the Bismarck Sea, ahead of an attack on Japanese forces nearby. But the mission was scrapped midflight because of bad weather, ...

The 35-year-old man, who lives in the Boston area, said he was repeatedly molested at age 10 in the summer of 1985 by an employee who held various titles, including assistant director and counselor, his lawyer, Mitchell Garabedian, told AOL News, without identifying either man. "He said Scott Brown inspired him to come forward," Garabedian ...

Joke's on the Northeast With April Fools' Snow

BOSTON -- A no-joke April Fools' snowstorm descended upon parts of the Northeast early Friday, a cruel prank on a region that was finally enjoying a reprieve from its long, white winter. The spring snowstorm was expected to last through Friday morning -- April Fools' Day -- dropping up to 10 inches of snow in some areas in eastern New York and around New England, dispiriting people eager for spring after a long, snow-filled winter. House Votes to End Mortgage Reduction Program

WASHINGTON -- House Republicans pushed through legislation Tuesday to terminate an underachieving Obama administration program designed to reduce mortgage payments for homeowners in danger of losing their homes to foreclosure. Most Democrats, while acknowledging that the Home Affordable Modification Program has fallen short of original goals, protested the vote to kill it. The White House, in a statement, said that if the bill ever reaches President Barack Obama's desk, his senior advisers would recommend he veto it. The vote was 252-170. The GOP-led House this month has voted to kill three ...

Trace Amount of Radiation Found in Massachusetts Rainwater

Massachusetts officials are testing drinking water supplies after a routine sample of rainwater collected in the state showed low levels of radiation that likely originated from Japan's crippled nuclear plant. Public health officials said the sample did not affect the water supply but said further testing was being done as a precaution. "The drinking water supply in Massachusetts is unaffected by this short-term, slight elevation in radiation," Public Health Commissioner John Auerbach said on Sunday, according to the Boston Herald. "However, we will carefully monitor the drinking water as we ...

North Carolina, Massachusetts Schools Boast 11 Sets of Twins

Assistant Principal Lisa Bodenheimer was brainstorming unique ways to fill up Paisley Magnet School's yearbook when she saw double. "I said, 'You know, I think we've got some twins. Why don't we do a twin page?' " she told AOL News. She should have allotted an entire yearbook section. Once Bodenheimer started counting, she realized the Winston-Salem, N.C., school hosted 11 sets of twins. Earlier in the year, Paisley housed an even dozen, split between fraternal and identical, male and female. The twin birthrate skyrocketed in the last decades of the 20th century and the early years of the ...
