Economy and Foreclosures Make Latino Voters Moving Targets for Democrats

Economy and Foreclosures Make Latino Voters Moving Targets for Democrats

In 2008, nearly 70 percent of Latino voters supported Barack Obama and helped Democrats expand their majorities in the House and Senate. But two years later, a new survey shows that Hispanic voters are far less motivated than most other Americans to go to the polls, a finding that could have a major impact on key races in California, Nevada, Texas and Florida, where Latinos make up between 15 and 20 percent of registered voters. Leslie Sanchez, president of the Impacto Group and author of "Los Republicanos: Why Hispanics and Republicans Need Each Other," said the the apathy among some Latinos...

2010 Elections: Big Potential for Republican Governor, Redistricting Wins

2010 Elections: Big Potential for Republican Governor, Redistricting Wins

It is a recurrent conceit of Democrats and Republicans alike that a great political realignment that will produce a lasting majority lurks just around the corner. In the more than two decades since Ronald Reagan left the White House, the U.S. electorate has been divided roughly equally. But when President George W. Bush won re-election in 2004, his strategist Karl Rove interpreted the outcome as a harbinger of long-term Republican control. Rove wasn't alone in this view. With the GOP holding the White House and Congress and a conservative majority on the Supreme Court, some Democrats feared th...

Meg Whitman's Lead Plunges in California's GOP Governor Primary

Back in March, former eBay chief executive Meg Whitman was leading state Insurance Commissioner Steve Poizner by about 50 points in two different polls, but a new survey by the Public Policy Institute of California conducted May 9-16 now has her lead down to 38 percent to 29 percent with 2 percent preferring someone else and 31 percent undecided. The margin of error is 3 points. At this point, Whitman would be a stronger candidate in the general election against Democrat Jerry Brown, the former governor and now state attorney general. Brown leads Whitman, 42 percent to 37 percent, with 21 per...

California Senate, Governor Contests Could Shape Up as Close Races

The Democrats have the edge right now in the California senator's and governor's races but by margins that suggest both races are competitive, according to a Daily Kos/Research 2000 poll conducted March 8-10. Former eBay chief executive Meg Whitman, who the poll shows far ahead of Insurance Commissioner Steve Poizner for the GOP gubernatorial nomination, is within 4 points of Democrat Jerry Brown, trailing him by a 45 percent to 41 percent margin.
