Reunited With Mets, Paul DePodesta and Sandy Alderson a Classic Pairing

SAN DIEGO -- Now that the mutual admiration society that is Sandy Alderson and Paul DePodesta has reconvened, West Coast Bias wonders what would happen if these two brainy men were to straighten out the Mets. One, ESPN would show the Mets on "Sunday Night Baseball" every week instead of every other week. Two, folks within baseball who despise the Mets -- and their numbers are vast -- actually would have reason to fear the Mets, who've reached the playoffs only once in the last 10 years. Three, PBS and Harvard would commission a documentary on Alderson and his protege DePodesta. If you can ...

Michael Lewis Will Replace Recent IR Addition Clifton Ryan on Rams

The Rams have lost defensive tackle Clifton Ryan for the season. St. Louis's fourth-year lineman out of Michigan State was placed on injured reserve Wednesday, effectively ending his season. Ryan hasn't played since the opener because of migraine headaches that have improved, then worsened periodically. The Rams had thought he was close to a return on a couple of occasions, but it never materialized as the migraines refused to abate. St. Louis said that Ryan's spot on the roster would go for the moment to veteran safety Michael Lewis, who signed as a free agent. ...

Michael Lewis Released by 49ers

Ask and you shall receive. So it's said, and it certainly was for Michael Lewis. The San Francisco strong safety is now an ex-49er after the club Monday granted his request of last Friday and gave him his release. Lewis demanded the release after learning Friday he was going to lose playing time to rookie Taylor Mays. In a statement released by the San Francisco organization Monday afternoon, coach Mike Singletary said, "I want to thank Michael for his hard work and leadership as a 49er. We wish him and his family his best.'' It was just a week ago that Lewis felt reassured by the 49ers ...

Report: Mike Singletary's Job With 49ers Safe for Now

As the 49ers' season continues to unravel, head coach Mike Singletary is left searching for a way to get his team on the winning track. San Francisco suffered a heartbreaking loss in Atlanta to fall to 0-4, capping a tumultuous week that included the firing of offensive coordinator Jimmy Raye and the benching of disgruntled strong safety Michael Lewis. Despite the 49ers' woes, however, ESPN's Adam Schefter reported that Singletary's job is safe for now, according to team and league sources. Still, there are no such assurances that Singletary will remain the head coach beyond this year, ...

Michael Lewis Walks Away From 49ers

Michael Lewis Walks Away From 49ers

The Mike Singletary regime apparently has lost another player. Strong safety Michael Lewis is the third 49er player to have walked out, one way or another, on the club in the last two months. Saying "the relationship is beyond repair,'' Lewis' agent, Rodney Williams, told CSNBayArea.com that the player was asking San Francisco to be released. Lewis was not on the plane when the 49ers took off for Atlanta Friday afternoon, nor was he at practice earlier. Taylor Mays and Reggie Smith got reps at strong safety in the workout that preceded the cross-country fight. San Francisco has yet to ...

Damage Control: Peyton Manning Knee Injury Not Serious

Did the injury bug hit your fantasy football team like it was a car windshield moving at 100 MPH? If so, it may be time to do some Damage Control. Quarterback • Michael Vick, Eagles - Vick took a hard hit to the ribs and had X-rays. The results came back negative. • Peyton Manning, Colts - Manning has a sore knee after Sunday's win. Fantasy Football Team Preview: 49ers

With Fantasy Football season ready to kick in high gear, FanHouse is here to preview each and every team -- one per day until we've done them all.Meet the ...Perennial sleepers. It seems like almost every season, people are discussing the fact that the 49ers are ready to break out and surprise people and win the NFC West. And then, almost every season, they suck. They might not be great this year either. Mike Singletary brings a more disciplined approach than even Mike Nolan, but you can't possibly expect Shaun Hill or Alex Smith to lead a team to the playoffs. Or can you? Well, actually, for ...

Columbia Pictures Cancels 'Moneyball' Production at Last Minute

Moneyball, Michael Lewis' novel about the economics of baseball (to put it in a nutshell), was all set to begin production next week with Brad Pitt and Steven Soderbergh in tow. Read: the nerds have finally won, Lebowski!Unfortunately that would-be -- and actually fictional -- revolution has now been delayed for the foreseeable future as Columbia Pictures, for all intents and purposes, pulled the plug on the movie. On Friday, Columbia Pictures topper Amy Pascal placed the picture into "limited turnaround," giving the filmmaker the chance to set it up at another studio, with Warner Bros. and ...

Fulmer to Play Himself in 'Blind Side'

Michael Lewis's opus The Blind Side is currently filming in Atlanta and slated for release on November 20, 2009. The book recently received a jolt of interest when the primary subject of the story, Ole Miss offensive tackle Michael Oher, who rises from a hardscrabble existence in Memphis to become the top offensive tackle in the nation, was drafted in the first round by the Baltimore Ravens. A major portion of the story focuses on the top-ranked Oher's recruitment by three men: then-LSU coach Nick Saban, then-Tennessee coach Phillip Fulmer, and then-Ole Miss coach Ed Orgeron. It's a recruiting ...

Chuck Todd Bombs on 'Wait Wait... Don't Tell Me!'

For the NPR listeners in our audience, this is old news. But those of you who didn't tune in to this weekend's edition of "Wait Wait... Don't Tell Me!" need to brace yourself for a real shocker:Chuck Todd has a lousy grasp of esoteric Iceland trivia.Chuck and his dashing goatee called in to the popular public radio show on Saturday to answer questions in a segment called "Not My Job." This week's theme was "Well, it's never too late to go back to cod-fishing..." and before you ask, no, it wasn't a retirement plan for Congressman/tugboat captain Don Young (R-AK).In fact, the segment concerned a ...
