Click here to visit the new home of Politics Daily! On Monday and Tuesday, President Obama convened a historic gathering in Washington to deal with the most urgent threat facing the globe: nuclear terrorism. Never before have so many world leaders gathered to discuss together how to thwart one of the greatest nightmares imaginable; 47 nations were represented. Though no sweeping treaties or agreements were reached, Obama did succeed on two important fronts. He placed the issue of controlling and securing nuclear material that could be used by terrorists (including al-Qaeda and its allies) at the top of the global to-do list. And he encouraged ...
(March 24) -- There are far too many fat children in America. It's impolite to say this so bluntly, but it's better to be impolite than sit idle as our youth repeat the same mistakes we as adults have collectively made. Following Sunday's historic vote on health care, it's only right to point out that the eating and exercise habits of many American adults puts a huge strain on our health care system. A study published in July by the journal Health Affairs revealed that obesity-related health spending has doubled in the past decade. A more recent report by Emory University confirms that ...
(March 16) -- Despite months of skepticism from conservative politicians and pundits, at least as many Republicans as Democrats now say they are certain to participate in the 2010 census, a new poll finds. According to a Pew Research Center poll conducted March 10-14, 74 percent of Republicans surveyed said they "definitely will" participate in the census. That number is up 20 percentage points from when Pew asked the same question the week of Jan. 6-10. The strong showing of support for the census among Republicans comes after months of criticism from conservative figures. Ross D. ...
(Nov. 9) -- One member of what detractors call the "party of no" broke ranks in this weekend's House showdown on health care reform. Louisiana's Joseph Cao was the lone Republican to say "yes" to the bill. Cao cast his vote after Democrats had tallied the 218 needed to win -- and after passage of Rep. Bart Stupak's amendment forbidding federal funding of abortions. The Catholic lawmaker, who represents an overwhelmingly Democratic district in New Orleans, said the amendment was "a top priority." On his Web page, Cao also said President Obama promised to work with him on the "critical health ...
There are only two congressional elections Tuesday, but one of them is turning out to be a real doozy. In what pundits are treating as a microcosm of the battle for the soul of the GOP, Republican Dede Scozzafava abruptly quit the race in New York's 23rd District and endorsed a Democrat instead of the Conservative Party candidate. Pressure from conservatives who rallied around third-party challenger Doug Hoffman -- including such potential Republican presidential candidates as Sarah Palin and Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty -- forced Scozzafava to give up. Another possible 2012 contender, Newt ...
Is the right-wing hit squad going cruel? After chasing both Van Jones, a White House green jobs adviser, and Yosi Sergant, the communications director of the National Endowment for the Arts, out of their jobs, they have a new target in the crosshairs: Kevin Jennings, director of the Department of Education's Office of Safe and Drug-Free Schools. The conservative Family Research Council has launched a crusade to get Jennings canned. The Washington Times has accused Jennings of "failure to report" statutory rape. Fox Nation Web site has also bashed Jennings for "covering up statutory rape." ...
Just a few days after Sarah Palin announced the title and release date of her memoir "Going Rogue: An American Life," it's already number one on the Amazon bestseller list -- the spot that represents the most-sold book of the retailer's millions of titles. Palin's memoir joins a plethora of conservative tomes that have dominated various bestseller lists for the past year. After two days on shelves, Glenn Beck's latest book, "Arguing with Idiots: How to Stop Small Minds and Big Government," will debut atop the New York Times bestseller list, and is preceded on Amazon's list only by Palin and ...
Michelle Malkin, conservative bulldog, is not known for pulling punches. But beneath the tough exterior of the best-selling blogger and columnist, there beats a heart that breaks. That's the point of Lloyd Grove's piece at The Daily Beast: "Michelle Malkin Has Feelings, Too." "Culture of Corruption: Obama and His Team of Tax Cheats, Crooks, and Cronies" is the title of Malkin's latest book and a pretty good example of her style -- unadulterated confrontation. Her fame comes from her controversial stands (defending the World War II internment of Japanese-Americans and favoring racial profiling ...
Ann Coulter and Michelle Malkin are entitled to their opinions, which they have plenty of -- in this case about President Obama and his reaction to the arrest of Professor Henry Louis Gates Jr. by Cambridge Police Sgt. James Crowley. They are not, however, to paraphrase the late Sen. Patrick Moynihan, entitled to their own facts, or entitled to invent a scenario in which the White House somehow prompted me to ask Obama about Gates at his press conference last week. ...
A spat of sorts has emerged between blogger and syndicated columnist Michele Malkin and FOX News talk-show host Bill O'Reilly. At issue is a comment left at Hot Air that characterizes Sonia Sotomayor, President Obama's pick for the Supreme Court, as "militant and socialist." Here's O'Reilly's explanation of the throw-down: The sniping between Malkin and O'Reilly is good theater, but the underlying issue is really rather mundane. As the comment in question was left by a reader, not one of the many fine writers paid to offer opinion pieces on the site, it is hardly fair to take Malkin to task ...
