Democrat Hansen Clarke, an artist and attorney, has been a state senator since 2003. Previously, he served three terms in the state House and was chief of staff for Rep. John Conyers. In the Aug. 3 Democratic primary, Clarke upset seven-term incumbent Carolyn Cheeks Kilpatrick, who was hurt by the corruption scandal that brought down her son, ex-Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick.
