Christine O'Donnell Denies Misusing Campaign Funds, Cites 'Disgruntled' Former Staffers

Defeated Delaware Senate candidate Christine O'Donnell, who is reportedly under federal investigation to determine whether she used campaign money for personal expenses, said Thursday the claims come from "disgruntled" former employees, channeled through a "left-wing" watchdog group. The Associated Press reported Wednesday that the case has not been sent to a grand jury but has been assigned to two federal prosecutors and two FBI agents in Delaware. The O'Donnell camp immediately labeled the probe "politically motivated." She blamed political rivals for what she called "thug tactics." "Keep ...

Year in Review: Top 12 Political Surprises of 2010

The predictions game was hard to play in 2010. It was a year of upsets, comebacks and feats of survival. In rough chronological order, here are a dozen developments that we didn't expect this year: Massachusetts miracle: Republican state Sen. Scott Brown wins the U.S. Senate seat held for 47 years by liberal lion Ted Kennedy. State Attorney General Martha Coakley, Brown's lackluster Democratic opponent, is not the only victim of the year's first "shellacking." President Barack Obama and his party are stunned by the loss of their 60-vote super majority, and their ambitious health care agenda ...

What Really Happens to Politicians Without Labels. It's Not Pretty.

What Really Happens to Politicians Without Labels. It's Not Pretty.

You may have heard there's a "No Labels" movement afoot to rouse the country's silent majority – the sane, reasonable, moderate middle that just wants civility, and solutions, and an end to the fighting in Washington. Maybe you're one of those people and you like this idea of no labels. There are lots of big names associated with this group -- senators, mayors, media celebs and more. But I'll be honest, I've been skeptical. You only have to listen to actual no-labels types to understand why. A few days after the official launch of No Labels, four of them offered eye-opening accounts of ...

'No Labels' Wants to Deliver on Public's Cry for Change, but Will It Work?

'No Labels' Wants to Deliver on Public's Cry for Change, but Will It Work?

NEW YORK – At the rollout for No Labels at Columbia University on Monday, one of the group's founders called the event "our little Woodstock of democracy." But the well- organized event, with its national media coverage, roster of top political names like New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg and Indiana Sen. Evan Bayh, and media heavyweights like David Gergen and Joe Scarborough, felt like anything but Woodstock. No Labels may be a protest movement of sorts (if you are the tea party or MoveOn.org or even the Republican or Democratic parties) but it's not exactly a radical idea the group is ...

Turning Victory to Defeat? How Obama's Election Helped Put the Senate in Play

Turning Victory to Defeat? How Obama's Election Helped Put the Senate in Play

Senate Democrats are in danger of losing their majority on Nov. 2, and two of the reasons go back to Barack Obama's own election as president: Illinois became vulnerable after he vacated the seat to move to the Oval Office, and the same thing happened in Colorado when he appointed the incumbent Democrat, Ken Salazar, to be his Interior Secretary. It could have been worse. The Delaware seat, long held by Joseph Biden before he became vice president, looked to be in big jeopardy until the GOP primary yielded a wild-card candidate in the person of Tea Party favorite Christine O'Donnell. New York ...

Weren't Republican Women Supposed to Like Men -- and Act Like Ladies?

Weren't Republican Women Supposed to Like Men -- and Act Like Ladies?

As others have noted, the hot trend among candidates on the campaign trail this year is questioning the other guy's sexuality. But that it's female candidates who are doing most of the ridiculing has me wondering whether those of us who've argued that more women on the political stage would raise the level of discourse weren't just plain wrong. And shouldn't we at least be asking whether there's any connection between these increasingly common taunts, from candidates who act like they're in the seventh grade, and the heartbreaking recent spate of bullying of and attacks on gay kids? Of ...
