Why Mitt Romney's Star is Rising

By  Matt Lewis
%PostTitle%

If Mitt Romney had convened a conclave to set about systematically destroying his potential presidential opponents, he could have done no better than this.Moderate Utah governor Jon Huntsman was dispatched abroad by President Obama, Nevada Sen. John Ensign and South Carolina Governor Mark Sanford's affairs ended any ambitions they may have had. And now, Sarah Palin's bizarre announcement that she is stepping down as governor of Alaska has -- in my mind, at least -- guaranteed that she cannot realistically win the GOP nomination in 2012 (though she may try).Had anyone at such a meeting invented ...

Is Sanford's Loss Women's Gain?

By  Matt Lewis

Immediately following a personal tragedy, it appears unseemly to discuss political strategy regarding who "wins" or "loses" as a result of someone's fall from grace. A week later, however, and it's time to cast aside those niceties, and discuss the impact the Sanford affair may have on politics. ...

A 'Coup' by Iran's Rulers?

By  Wesley Vaughn
%PostTitle%

On Friday, Iranians went to the polls to decide the fate of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. One day later, government officials announced the results: 62.6 percent of the vote for Ahmadinejad and 33.75 percent for the lead opposition candidate, Mir Hossein Mousavi. The numbers were quickly disputed by Mousavi's supporters, who, according to an unidentified witness on CNN, "were mostly young 20-something men and women." Large protests such as the one seen here took place, and many others have occurred over the past few days. The government blocked text messaging, Facebook, and YouTube, but this ...

Gallup: 52% Say GOP is Leaderless

By  David Knowles
%PostTitle%

A new poll by Gallup and USA Today finds that 52% of those asked to name "the main person who speaks for Republicans today" drew a blank. Further distressing for a party badly in need of attracting moderate voters, the names that did register some support are as follows:Rush Limbaugh 13John McCain 6%Mitt Romney came in at 1%; Sarah Palin did not make the list. Of course, this question is much easier to answer if your party happens to hold the White House: 67 percent of Democrats resoundingly responded that Barack Obama was their leader. In another sign of continued trouble for the GOP, 33% of ...

Mitt's Makeover: Channeling Reagan for 2012 Run

By  Carl M. Cannon
%PostTitle%

Mitt Romney is running for president of the United States, again. The former Massachusetts governor doesn't say it quite that way. He merely states that he won't "close that door," adding that he isn't yet ready to walk through it, either. But there's only one plausible reason why a wealthy and happy family guy -- and Romney is both -- would undertake all the speeches, interviews, and fundraising for fellow Republicans that Romney is doing. He has unfinished business in politics. To put it bluntly, Mitt Romney does not want to follow in the footsteps of his father, George Romney, another ...

Obama Ships a 2012 Presidential Challenger to China

By  Dylan and Ethan Ris
%PostTitle%

President Obama has figured out a pretty surefire tactic when it comes to dispensing of potential 2012 rivals. It's a cross between a promotion and a deportation.Take Hillary Rodham Clinton, who fell just a few British nobility votes short of knocking off Obama in the Democratic party primary a year ago. With rumors buzzing that she would run again in 2012 on a PUMA theme, Obama tapped her as his Secretary of State. Now she has more to do with Lebanese elections than American ones, and Obama will undoubtedly cruise to re-nomination in three years. This strategy worked so well that Obama has come ...

Campaign 2012: Sarah Palin Fans Fire Back at Mitt Romney

By  Tommy Christopher
%PostTitle%

In a possible preview of the 2012 Republican primary contest, a skirmish has erupted between Mitt Romney and fans of Alaska Governor Sarah Palin. At issue are comments that Romney made implying that Palin was only included on Time Magazine's Time 100 list because she's hot. When asked why the list only included 2 Republicans, Rush Limbaugh and Sarah Palin, Romney had this to say:John, I'd like to have a lot more influential Republicans. I think there are a lot more influential Republicans than that would suggest. But was that the issue on the most beautiful people or the most influential ...

Newt Gingrich Becomes a Catholic, Thus Complicating His Next Divorce

By  Dylan and Ethan Ris
%PostTitle%

Newt Gingrich is always up for a challenge. In 1994, he undertook an ambitious plan to shrink and restructure the United States government, resulting in the famous "Contract With America." Four years later, he had to figure out a way to lead the impeachment of then-president Bill Clinton for having an affair with an intern while simultaneously carrying on an affair of his own. He succeeded handily. Now comes his latest hurdle: Gingrich became a Catholic over the weekend, which runs at great odds with his number one hobby-- getting divorced. Will it work? Chris Buckley, for one, is skeptical... ...

Think Mitt Romney Might Be Running for President?

By  Dylan and Ethan Ris
%PostTitle%

Mitt Romney constantly gets asked if he's running for president in 2012, which is a little presumptuous on the part of reporter-types.Anyone who's been watching Romney knows that he's just engaging in the normal routine of any wholesome, patriotic, non-2012 presidential candidate. We're sure he has plenty of reasons for holding fundraisers, penning conservative editorials, writing a political book and selling off a few of his more embarrassing mansions. But if he were running for president by some strange chance, his recent actions would have some healthy precedent in past presidential ...

GOP Dilemma: What if Obama's Plan Works?

By  David Knowles
%PostTitle%

Often times, politics boils down to a game of tactics. In the words of RNC Chairman Michael Steele, opposing parties (and sometimes members of the same one) engage in a rhetorical chess match that has as much to do with thwarting an opponent as it does promoting a heart-felt ideology. As we've seen in the first two months of the Obama administration, partisan gamesmanship is alive and well in DC. The Stimulus package and Obama's first budget have been met with near unanimous condemnation by Republicans, and the question of whether GOP members should actively hope that the president "fails" has ...
