TRAPPES, France -- Karima has a plan. If police stop her for wearing a veil over her face, she'll remove it - then put it back on once they're out of sight. If that doesn't work, she'll stay home, or even leave France. For Muslim women who cover their faces with veils, it is the moment for making plans. Starting April 11, a new law banning garments that hide the face takes effect. Women who disobey it risk a fine, special classes and a police record. The law comes as Muslims face what some see as a new jab at their religion: President Nicolas Sarkozy's party is holding a debate Tuesday on ...
A new survey sponsored by a British Muslim organization estimates that about 5,200 people in the United Kingdom converted to Islam last year, part of a steady increase since 2001. White British women made up the biggest number of converts, and the average age of conversion was 27. The report, titled "A Minority Within a Minority," was issued by the Faith Matters organization and conducted by Kevin Brice, an office administrator at Swansea University. Using figures drawn from the 2001 Scottish census, Brice estimates that the number of converts to Islam in the U.K. may have risen from around ...
CAIRO (Oct.27) -- Al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden threatens in a new audio tape to kill French citizens to avenge their country's support for the U.S.-led war in Afghanistan and a new law that will ban face-covering Muslim veils. In the tape obtained by satellite television station Al-Jazeera and then posted on its website on Wednesday, bin Laden said France was aiding the Americans in the killing of Muslim women and children in an apparent reference to the war in Afghanistan. He said the kidnapping of five French citizens in the African nation of Niger last month was a reaction to what he ...
"The big problem is [how] to define the protection of women's rights as the problem of the 21st century. If the world does that, [women's inequality] will become like the eradication of apartheid -- people will insist that it's wrong, it's wrong, it's wrong, and that's when change happens."Those words come from Ayaan Hirsi Ali, a Somali victim of genital mutilation who wrote a screenplay about the mistreatment of Islamic women. Theo van Gogh turned the screenplay into the film "Submission." Two months later he was assassinated. Ali, whose life was threatened, has lived under guard for the past ...
To Jill and Bonnie, who felt that Obama was miserly with his words in Cairo today only when it came to talking plainly about women in the Muslim world, I say: Me, three! I set my alarm early so I could hear the president's speech in real time, and mostly found his rhetoric bracing. (Or was that the cappuccino?) He wasn't shy about coolly ticking off the facts of life on the very real threat of Islamic extremism, or about pushing Hamas to give up violence and recognize Isreal, or about decrying Arab anti-Semitism: "Around the world, the Jewish people were persecuted for centuries, and ...
