Click here to visit the new home of Politics Daily! As Comcast takes over NBC Universal just before midnight Friday, hockey will be impacted in a potentially positive way. According to an industry source, the NHL All-Star Game -- broadcast on VERSUS on Sunday -- has been selected as the first "cross-channel priority" for the new NBCUniversal. A "cross-channel priority" is an initiative identified by the network's marketing council to receive broad promotion across NBCUniversal's numerous platforms. NBCUniversal has been successfully employing the initiative for big events such as the Olympics, NFL Kickoff, movie premieres like "Despicable Me" ...
NBC thinks Will Ferrell is "kind of a big deal." So much so that as "The Office" bids farewell to Steve Carell, the network has locked down Ferrell to send off the Dunder Mifflin branch manager and ease the transition into the program's post-Michael Scott era. The former "Saturday Night Live" performer will join his "Anchorman" co-star Carell during a four-show arc, including one episode after Carell's departure. But some are not so keen on the reunion. NPR's Linda Holmes says it could be a "bad idea": As I said, I like Ferrell, and I think he's a good actor, and he's not just a big goof. ...
When the Federal Communications Commission approved the Comcast/NBC merger earlier this week, it set off all the usual complaints from all the usual suspects. You should be afraid! You should be mad!! Too much content control under one roof!!! Poppycock. So what if one company owns ... 10 TV and movie production studios (including Universal Pictures), 20 cable channels, 11 regional broadcast TV stations, 15 Telemundo stations (arriba!), nine regional sports cable networks, one regional news cable station (New England Cable News), a whole bunch of websites, two pro sports teams in ...
Jeff Zucker, the one-time wunderkind producer who rose to become chief of NBC Universal, is leaving the 'Peacock Network' ahead of the company's impending merger with cable giant Comcast (CMCSA). ...
Many of us watched the Golden Globes Sunday night expecting to see Hollywood's typical and inappropriately maudlin reaction to the tragedy in Haiti. But if we were looking for material to mock the stars, whose glittery lives are largely untouched by the nightmare, we were disappointed. Instead, I was pleasantly surprised and impressed that the NBC production team and the celebrities showed respect and restraint, and, when appropriate, an appeal for fans to send money to well-run charitable organizations for relief efforts in Haiti. These awards shows have become an odd showcase for ...
Now that NBC has smoothly figured out its late-night programming, media observers can chatter about another looming crisis for the Peacock Network: Dick Ebersol's next move. Ebersol, the Yale-educated Connecticut native who has run NBC Sports since 1989, announced last week that the network expects to lose money on the upcoming Vancouver Winter Olympics, citing the bleak advertising climate last year and the burden of NBC's massive rights fee. It was a costly -- and likely galling -- admission of failure by Ebersol, whose tenure at NBC has been defined by Olympics coverage and who in 2003 ...
After nine months of negotiations, Comcast has agreed to buy NBC Universal from General Electric, the New York Times reports. The deal, which will give the country's largest cable provider a 51 percent share of NBC, will reshape the television industry and fulfill Comcast's longtime goal of producing television shows and movies. GE will still own 49 percent of the network. As part of the joint ownership deal, Comcast will contribute its stable of channels, worth about $7.25 billion, and pay GE $6.5 billion in cash for a total of $13.25 billion. GE purchased back the 20 percent share of NBC ...
Just when community colleges thought they could breathe a sigh of relief -- thanks to some much-needed moral and financial support from the commander in chief -- advocates are raising an eyebrow and possibly readying themselves for another P.R. battle. This time, NBC, with the help of Joel McHale ("The Soup") and Chevy Chase (who needs no introduction), might be pushing some buttons. In "Community," a comedy slated to roll out this fall, McHale plays Jeff Winger, a student at the fictional Greendale Community College, who is attempting to wheel and deal his way through the school as a fallen ...
