Click here to visit the new home of Politics Daily!Bill Mayer has only three things to show for his weekend's work. A small medal around his neck and two blisters on his feet. That's not a lot to show for running a marathon, but sometimes numbers don't tell the whole story. Take the number 70. It's supposed to mean you're too old to run 26.2 miles. But two days after finishing the New York City Marathon, Mayer was giving the number a new meaning. "I feel like dancing," he said. Or take the number $62,553. That's how many dollars Mayer and his son raised on Sunday. They'll mean books and scholarships for a school in Harlem -- the Harlem ...
(Nov. 9) -- It took runners hours to finish the New York City marathon on Sunday, but what couch potato has time for that? Instead, two newly released time lapse videos let you experience the race in mere minutes without ever breaking a sweat. Approximately 45,000 runners began their race in Staten Island with a run across the Verrazano Narrows bridge into Brooklyn, and cameras were rolling. The city's Metropolitan Transit Authority has produced aerial video showing the start of the race, while WNYC's on-the-ground footage gives you a sense of what it's like to actually run the marathon (see ...
From out of the hole to crossing the finish line, Edison Pena, the Chilean miner who was rescued last month from a Chile mine, finished the New York City Marathon today, despite not competing in a race in years. Pena, an amateur runner, completed the 26.2-mile course through the City's five boroughs at 3:24 p.m., with a time of 5 hours, 40 minutes, 51 seconds. "First, I want to run this marathon, but secondly, I'd like to motivate those people who aren't running the marathon to do so in the future," he said before starting Sunday morning. "I also want to especially motivate young children ...
NEW YORK (Nov. 7) -- A Chilean miner ran, walked and hobbled his way to the finish line of the New York City Marathon on Sunday, showing the passionate grit that helped him survive more than two months trapped underground. Edison Pena crossed the Central Park finish line at 3:24 p.m., with a time of 5 hours, 40 minutes, 51 seconds. The Elvis fan was draped in a Chilean flag as Presley songs played over the speakers. The 34-year-old survivor had beat his own goal - to complete the course through the city's five boroughs in six hours. Kathy Willens, AP Chilean miner Edison Pena ...
Haile Gebrselassie, one of the greatest distance runners in history, dropped out of the NYC Marathon at the 16th mile on Sunday. After that, he retired for good. The New York Times reports that Gebrselassie, the marathon world record holder at 2 hours, 3 minutes and 59 seconds, announced his intentions to retire from competitive racing hours after he posted a DNF in New York City, his first appearance in the five-borough race. "I never think about to retire," Gebrselassie told The New York Times. "But for the first time, this is the day. Let me stop and do other work after this." More NYC ...
What are the NYC Marathon results for 2010? Ethiopia's Gebre Gebremariam won the men's title of this year's NYC Marathon, pulling away after world-record holder Haile Gebrselassie retired with an injury 16 miles into the race. Kenyan Edna Kiplagat won the NYC Marathon women's title, finishing ahead of American Shalane Flanagan, who was making her marathon debut. Gebremariam finished with a time of 2 hours, 8 minutes and 14 seconds. Kiplagat finished in 2:28:20 after she pulled away two miles from the finish line. Meb Keflezighi was the top American male, finishing sixth overall with a time ...
Ethiopia's Gebre Gebremariam won the men's title of the ING New York City Marathon, pulling away Sunday after world-record holder Haile Gebrselassie retired with an injury 16 miles into the race. Kenyan Edna Kiplagat won the women's title -- her first major marathon championship -- ahead of American Shalane Flanagan, who was making her marathon debut. Gebremariam covered the 26.2 miles in 2 hour, 8 minutes and 14 seconds. He became the fourth man -- and first in 19 years -- to win his debut on the streets of New York. Kiplagat finished in 2:28:20 after she pulled away two miles from the ...
For being stuck in a mine for 70 days, Edison Pena is surprisingly upbeat. He is in New York to run the New York City Marathon (apparently, Edison became known as "The Runner" for his daily workouts) and on Thursday he made an appearance on The Late Show with David Letterman. Pena spoke candidly about being trapped underground for more than two months, and through an interpreter he discussed the experience, right down to the hows and whys of using a (makeshift) bathroom in such a situation. And while that made for compelling television, the highlight was hearing Pena -- backed by Paul ...
Edison Pena will be running in the NYC Marathon on Nov. 7 after gaining notoriety as the trapped Chilean miner whose love of running helped pass the time and keep him in his right mind while stuck underground. In an interview with the New York Daily News, Pena talked about his experience while trapped and participating in the marathon. When he arrives in New York on Wednesday, it'll be the first time the 34-year-old has ever left Chile. "I know it will be very hard," he said of the marathon, "(but) I have no fear. "I am not a grand champion, but I have always been an athlete," he said. He ...
"Where are you from?" It is a question I used to get all the time, no matter where I was in the country, because of my Spanish accent, but I don't hear it as much anymore. Some time ago I decided that I finally lived in a post-accent society. But I was confronted with reminders of my "otherness" Tuesday when I opened the New York Times and read about the plight of Mebrahtom Keflezighi, the amazing winner of the New York City Marathon. He was the first American to win that race since 1982. Keflezighi, you see, never ran competitively before he immigrated to the United States at the age of 12, ...
