Click here to visit the new home of Politics Daily!WASHINGTON -- A report released today on the scientific methods used to investigate the deadly anthrax attacks disputes a key conclusion by the FBI -- and has triggered calls for an independent review of the entire case. Investigators have concluded that government scientist Bruce Ivins mailed anthrax-laden letters to members of Congress and the media in 2001. Five people were killed and 17 others sickened. Ivins committed suicide in July 2008 before charges could be filed. Ivins' attorney said the new report casts doubt on the allegations against the scientist. AP Investigators ...
Maybe the Mayan 2012 doomsday predictions were off by a year. More than likely the timing is just a coincidence, but after 100,000 fish turned up in a massive fish kill on Thursday, approximately 4,000 birds dropped dead from the sky just before midnight on New Year's Eve, and a new report declared that 96 percent of four species of bees have died off in recent years, the world's ecosystems seem more than a little fragile at the start of 2011. Surge Desk reviews the not-so-cheery mass die-off news about our nation's birds, bees and fish (to say nothing of recent monarch butterfly declines) ...
Even Neanderthals understood the value of a diverse diet. Researchers have identified strong evidence that the Neanderthal diet, previously thought to be almost exclusively meat-based, also included a nutritious portion of cooked vegetables, according to findings in the upcoming issue of Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. The scientists say they discovered stuff such as date palms, legumes and grass seeds in the "dental calculus" (science for what you didn't floss) of Neanderthal skeletons found in Belgium and Iraq. But how can they tell that Neanderthals cooked their ...
(July 19) -- To a parent's ears, there's nothing more enchanting than the babble of a child learning to talk. Now research shows that those nonsense syllables could contain coded signals that a toddler is autistic. In a study released today, scientists report that they have designed a computer program that can distinguish between the speech of normal children and those with autism. Even though the work is only a first stab at analyzing audio recordings for signs of autism, it can correctly identify more than 85 percent of autistic and nonautistic children. "We had no idea that this was ...
In what's being called "the most comprehensive report ever on climate change," the National Academy of Sciences urged aggressive action to curb global warming, including a cap-and-trade program and taxes on carbon emissions. Three studies requested by Congress issued Wednesday provide the broad outlines for a national strategy to deal with climate change, The Los Angeles Times reported. Two more studies are still to come. Bold actions are necessary because "climate change is occurring, the Earth is warming ... concentrations of carbon dioxide are increasing, and there are very clear ...
