Meryl Streep to Raise Money for Embattled National Women's History Museum

Actress Meryl Streep -- who has played such strong females as culinary pioneer Julia Child and nuclear plant whistleblower Karen Silkwood -- will headline a Sept. 21 benefit in Washington for the National Museum of Women's History. Although no taxpayer money will be spent on the museum that organizers hope to build near the Smithsonian-dominated National Mall, its congressional champions have spent 12 years vainly trying to pass a bill allowing museum officials to buy federal land for the project. Two earlier Washington sites -- the Post Office Pavilion and the Smithsonian Arts and Industries ...

Thousands Pack National Mall to Demand Immigration Reform

While lawmakers fiercely debated health care reform before a historic vote in the Capitol on Sunday, thousands of people rallied on the National Mall outside to demand that Washington put immigration reform on the front burner. Entire families turned out, including young children and parents with strollers. Others came with church, school, or community activist groups. As the crowd marched past the Capitol at the end of the rally, they were joined by several drummers and a marching band. Still, as chief horticulturist Rob DeFeo notes, decades of heavy human traffic have taken a toll: "Basically, the bulk density of the soil is the same as cinder ...

Washington's Dilapidated National Mall Gets a Needed Boost at Fundraiser

Young D.C. professionals mixed and mingled Thursday night at a fundraiser for restoration of the National Mall, the beloved heart of the nation's capitol. The cocktail benefit was for the Trust for the National Mall, a nonprofit partner of the National Park Service dedicated to restoring the Mall, which has become rundown due to lack of funding and 30 years of neglect. "This is America's front yard," exclaimed John "Chip" Akridge, the chairman of the Trust for the National Mall and of Akridge commercial real estate. "Our goal is to make the Mall the best damn park in the world." Speaking to ...

National Mall a National Disgrace?

National Mall a National Disgrace?

This is for all of those who fly into Reagan National Airport: How many of you have looked out the windows when the pilot announces he is banking over the famous monuments of Washington? How many have taken pride in this view? Unfortunately, like so much of the nation's capital, it looks better from a distance. ...
