The tactics vary: mandatory sonograms and anti-abortion counseling, sweeping limits on insurance coverage, bans on abortions after 20 weeks of pregnancy. To abortion-rights activists, they add up to the biggest political threat since the Roe v. Wade decision of 1973 that legalized abortion nationwide. Here's one style of driving that will really get your motor running. A routine traffic stop in Lincoln, Neb., turned interesting when a sheriff's deputy pulled over a pickup truck loaded with naked people. After getting a tip about a suspicious vehicle, a Lancaster County deputy spotted a truck that matched the vehicle's description on Feb. 18 at around 2:25 a.m., according to JournalStar.com. ...
The recent unseasonably warm weather in the eastern two-thirds of the country has resulted in a quick and dramatic decrease in snow cover across the United States, but the lack of heavy rain in the near term means only isolated areas will see flooding. During the past five days, the percentage of the continental U.S. with at least a little snow on the ground has decreased from 64.9 percent to 31.3 percent, according to the National Operational Hydrologic Remote Sensing Center. The snow will continue to melt this week as the warmth intensifies and expands. AOL Weather Resources: Get Your ...
Massive snowfall, ice accumulation, stopped commerce and stranded travelers are all part of the massive blizzard that has pounded a large portion of the U.S. in the past couple of days, but there's another part of the weather story: dangerous Arctic cold that is spreading. Temperatures will plummet to below zero across much of the Midwest and the Plains tonight, including the snow-ravaged region from Chicago to Oklahoma City. And the Arctic cold will begin to spread into the northeastern part of the country as the storm exits into the Atlantic. Low temperatures will be in the minus teens in ...

Nebraska state Sen. Mark Christensen has drawn fire from critics for his proposal to let principals and teachers carry concealed handguns as a way to keep violence out of the schools. Christensen introduced in the state Legislature a bill that would allow school administrators and security personnel to carry the weapons, as long as they have a permit to do so. The legislation came in the aftermath of the Tucson, Ariz., tragedy and the Omaha, Neb., school shooting earlier this month. According to the legislation, proposed last month, each school board would need to approve the measure by a ...
Could we be looking at a future Sarah Palin in the new Miss America? Miss Nebraska, Teresa Scanlan, was crowned Miss America 2011 on Saturday night in Las Vegas. The first Nebraskan ever crowned as the pageant's winner, Scanlan, 17, said in an interview with The Associated Press that she wanted to be not a doctor, school teacher or even television news anchor when she graduated from college. She wants to be a politician -- after she finishes law school. "At this point, attorneys and politicians are looked down on and have terrible reputations for being greedy and power hungry and I really ...
OMAHA, Neb. -- Hours before he opened fire on two principals at his high school, a Nebraska teenager calmly accepted a suspension for driving on an athletic field. He went home to speak with his father and some friends - all the while giving no hint of turning violent, police said Thursday. But after his father left to run errands, 17-year-old Robert Butler Jr. took a handgun from a closet and headed back to the school to confront the administrator who had punished him. Butler, whose father is a detective for the Omaha Police Department, asked to see the assistant principal and fatally shot ...
Now that Christmas is over, were you thinking about taking a bite out of that festively decorated gingerbread house that's lingering among your holiday decorations? Check where you bought it first. Gingerbread houses made by Rolf's Patisserie have been recalled in 22 states by Whole Foods Market, the company announced, part of a larger recall of desserts from the Lincolnwood, Ill., baker, NPR reported.
