"I will defend her right to speak her mind," the mayor said Monday. The war of tweets began Sunday when Palin called the mosque an "unnecessary provocation" on her Twitter feed. "Peace-seeking Muslims, pls understand, Ground Zero mosque is UNNECESSARY provocation; it stabs hearts," she wrote. "Pls reject it in interest of healing." (July 19) -- The month of June marked the fourth consecutive month with record-breaking global temperatures, including widespread intense heat across the United States. This week, the hottest air will shift out of the Southwest and southern Plains into the Deep South and Carolinas, where heat has been persistent so far this summer. Globally, the combined land and sea surface temperature average was 61.1 degrees Fahrenheit in June, which is the warmest on record and 1.22 degrees above the 20th century average, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. In addition, the ...
(July 9) -- The city of New York and its police department discriminated against a police officer by reducing his pension because of his military service, according to a federal lawsuit filed today. David Goodman worked as a New York cop for 17 years, including 10 years as detective, before retiring in 2009. Goodman, who was a member of the U.S. Army Reserve, served two stints in Iraq as well as one in Afghanistan and one in Jordan while on the NYPD payroll. Prosecutors say Goodman was a victim of discrimination because city authorities relied on his base salary while he was on active ...
(July 8) -- It's pretty stupid to brag about the weather in your hometown. You had nothing to do with it, no one cares, and everyone thinks you're a bore to prattle on about it. I mean, take Washington, D.C. Right now it's 90 degrees with high humidity. My head hurts and my thighs are sweating. (I'm told that outside my office it's much, much hotter.) D.C. is the hottest city in the world, and we are the toughest people on Earth to put up with it. Don't believe me? Check this out: The high temperature Wednesday in El Obeid, Sudan, was 97 degrees. Right now, as I write this, the temperature in ...
(July 6) -- With temperatures soaring along the East Coast, it's hard to blame people for blasting the AC. But concerns about a blackout are running high as well. On Aug. 14, 2003, a single outage caused more than 50 million people to lose power across the U.S. and Canada for more than four days. Even New York City's skyline was plunged into darkness. Fortunately, energy experts say there are ways to prevent such a massive power outage. New York City law enforcement officials said Sunday they were looking for a man caught on surveillance footage near the scene of a bombing attempt in Times Square, the New York Times reports. On the tape, a white man who appears to be in his 40s walked away from the black SUV that contained the bomb materials, looks over his shoulder and removes a layer of clothing. The Nissan Pathfinder discovered Saturday night on West 45th Street in Manhattan contained firecrackers, gasoline, propane and alarm clocks, as well as eight large bags of fertilizer. The alarm clocks were wired to a gun locker ...
(April 4) -- New York City will take up its search for the remains of 9/11 victims again Monday by sifting through debris from the World Trade Center site in the hopes of releasing families from the emotional purgatory they have been in for the last nine years. The material has been collected over the last two years from areas at ground zero that were previously inaccessible after the 2001 attack. But the city has been keeping the debris in a landfill in Staten Island, angering many families of the victims. Shawn Baldwin, AP New York City will take up its search for the remains of 9/11 ...
NEW YORK (March 11) -- A longstanding battle that has stymied construction at the site of the World Trade Center comes to a head this week. Barring a last-minute deal, arbitrators are set to impose a solution Friday on the financial spat that pits the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, which owns the site, against Larry Silverstein, the developer who leased the World Trade Towers only weeks before the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks. "It's a disgrace that nine years after the attacks we are still looking at a hole in the ground," New York City Council Speaker Christine Quinn said Tuesday, ...
(Feb. 10) – Whether it's the Empire State Building versus the Lincoln Memorial or Nathan's hot dogs versus Ben's Chili Bowl, New Yorkers and Washingtonians find ways to compete over virtually everything – culture, food, sports, arts, nightlife, cost of living, even self-importance. This week's snowstorm adds another metric to the long-running list: blizzard response. We've been keeping score all day, here's where the duel stands as of Wednesday afternoon.
