Click here to visit the new home of Politics Daily!Tea Party conservatives emerged from the final big night of the 2010 primary season with at least two shocking upsets: Their pick in Delaware's Republican Senate primary, Christine O'Donnell, toppled veteran Rep. Michael Castle. And Buffalo developer Carl Paladino, a political newcomer allied with the Tea Party, defeated former congressman Rick Lazio in New York's Republican gubernatorial primary. The Delaware primary was a fitting climax to a season of noisy contests between candidates anointed by the Republican establishment because they seemed more electable, and those favored by Tea Party ...
(March 18) -- When The New York Times reported that New York Gov. David Paterson intervened in a domestic abuse case involving his top aide, Paterson said the story was based on unsourced claims and unnamed sources. Now, the governor says, he was one of those sources. Paterson told a New York radio station today that he was the source who led the Times to write the story that prompted him to drop his election bid and triggered the resignation of five of his staffers amid calls that he do the same. The Times flatly denies the claim. Chris Hondros, Getty Images New York Gov. David Paterson ...
The number of New Yorkers who believe Gov. David Paterson should finish out his term has dropped sharply as new revelations continue to emerge about his efforts to get a woman not to go public with charges of abuse against one of his top aides, according to a Quinnipiac University poll conducted March 3-4. Quinnipiac says that 46 percent now say Paterson should stay on the job compared to 42 percent who believe he should resign, with 12 percent undecided. In its March 3 poll, 61 percent said he should finish his term, 31 percent said he should resign and 9 percent were undecided. "Support ...
ALBANY, N.Y. (March 4) - The top spokesman for Gov. David Paterson resigned Thursday, saying he couldn't "in good conscience continue" in his job, becoming the third key administration member to jump ship as the governor faces two misconduct investigations and increasing calls for him to quit. "As a former officer in the United States Navy, integrity and commitment to public service are values I take seriously," Peter Kauffmann stated in a brief statement. "Unfortunately, as recent developments have come to light, I cannot in good conscience continue in my current position." Nathaniel ...
NEW YORK (March 3) -- Political scandals are piling up at an astonishing pace in New York, even by the standards of a state distinguished for dysfunction. Within just a few hours today, three scandals involving New York politicians emerged, each with its own twist. Gov. David Paterson, who is holding onto his seat as serious allegations that he intervened in a domestic abuse case on behalf of an aide are investigated, faced a separate set of charges for allegedly accepting free World Series tickets. Rep. Charles Rangel, who has been accused of a variety of ethics charges involving taxes, ...
ALBANY, N.Y. (March 2) -- An unfolding scandal threatening Gov. David Paterson and his administration claimed its second public safety official Tuesday when the head of the New York State Police casually told a television reporter that he was retiring, partly because of intense media scrutiny. Superintendent Harry Corbitt had acknowledged in February that a State Police official had contact with a woman who had accused a top Paterson aide of assaulting her on Halloween in New York City's Bronx borough. Soon after, the woman dropped the domestic violence complaint against the aide, David ...
ALBANY, N.Y. (Feb. 9) – New York Gov. David Paterson, defying calls from even fellow Democrats to drop out of the race for a full term, said Tuesday that he would leave only if the voters turned him out through the ballot box, or "in a box." Paterson spoke to reporters after several days of rumors sweeping the state Capitol about carousing in the governor's mansion, all of which Paterson strongly denied. Since Paterson took over from his predecessor, who resigned in a prostitution scandal, his popularity has plummeted and many Democrats have voiced their preference that Attorney ...
ALBANY, N.Y. (Feb. 7) -- Gov. David Paterson met privately with key Democratic leaders about his re-election plans as questions swirl around the state capitol about a variety of unproven accusations involving the Democratic governor's personal conduct. Paterson campaign spokesman Richard Fife said the weekend calls had nothing to do with the accusations but were "routine re-election campaign calls." While there has been some improvement in New York Gov. David Paterson's job approval and favorability ratings, Attorney General Andrew Cuomo would still crush him in a Democratic primary if he decides to challenge the incumbent for the party's nomination, according to a Siena Research Institute poll conducted Dec. 6-9. Cuomo leads Paterson, 67 percent to 23 percent. In a general election, Cuomo would also trounce former Rep. Rick Lazio by 68 percent to 22 percent, while Paterson barely edges him, 42 percent to 40 percent. The margin of error is 3.8 points. Sixty-five percent of voters say they ...
While news broke this week that former New York City Mayor Rudolph Giuliani would not run for governor, the focus is now on reports he will run for senator, a job he probably has a better chance of winning, according to a set of Marist polls this week. ...
