MySpace: Now With 47 Percent Fewer Employees

These are tough times for former social-networking giants. Mike Jones, the CEO of MySpace, announced Tuesday that his company was poised to terminate almost half of its employees in a major restructuring effort, CNET reported. "Today's tough, but necessary changes were taken in order to provide the company with a clear path for sustained growth and profitability," Jones said in a statement describing the forthcoming action. "These changes were purely driven by issues related to our legacy business, and in no way reflect the performance of the new product." The move comes after earlier ...

Jon Stewart: 'Ground Zero Mosque' Funding Source 'Owns' Fox News

(Aug. 24) -- A case of "do as they say, not as they do"? For the Fox News cable television network, opposition to Park51 (the Cordoba House), the proposed Islamic cultural center slated to be built just blocks from the site of the 9/11 terror attacks in lower Manhattan, has been something of a shared cause among the station's hosts and commentators. In particular, on Monday morning, the program "Fox & Friends" ran a segment in which the hosts, Steve Doocy and Brian Kilmeade, interviewed former Bush administration spokespeople Dan Senor and Dana Perino regarding the funding sources for ...

Bill O'Reilly - Keith Olbermann Feud Escalates; GE Responds to 'Smear Campaign'

General Electric jumped into the long-standing feud between Fox News Channel's Bill O'Reilly and MSNBC's Keith Olbermann after O'Reilly said that the company -- which owns NBC and MSNBC -- possibly supplies terrorists with material used in roadside bombs. GE said Wednesday that "The O'Reilly Factor" report is "irresponsible and maliciously false." Fox said the GE accusations are unrelated to the battles with MSNBC.The latest round in the O'Reilly-Olbermann fight started Tuesday when O'Reilly, reporting on a possible FBI probe of U.S. companies supplying components for bombs aimed at American ...

Mitt Romney Defies Fox

Mitt Romney Defies Fox

Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney is defying Fox News' ban on the use of the network's footage from the presidential debates that it sponsored, according to Talking Points Memo. Good for him.Fox's ban on the public using clips from newsworthy events was stupid and probably -- in the view of this non-lawyer -- illegal. It would seem that Fox is in violation of section 107 of the Fair Use Doctrine which says that it's "fair" to use copyrighted material for "criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching, scholarship, and research." That would seem to cover 30-second television spots and the ...

Why Murdoch Won't Give Away Fox Footage

Why Murdoch Won't Give Away Fox Footage

MoveOn and conservative bloggers are joining forces to fight Fox News' attempts to prevent public use of footage from the political debates the conservative cable channel hosted last spring. As Talking Points Memo notes, this ad-hoc coalition has already convinced CNN, ABC and NBC to do the same thing. 'The primary concern of the right-wing bloggers seems to be that if they can't use Fox debate footage on their sites, it hampers their ability to comment on the GOP primary and on politics in general." the Web site says. "MoveOn, for its part, opposes Fox because its refusal to allow use of ...
