Killing of Iraqi Militia Leader Sparks Fear of Renewed Sunni-Shiite War

In a sign of renewed sectarian conflict, assassins burst into a home in Baghdad's western suburbs Monday morning, killing a prominent member of Sahwa, or Sons of Iraq, the largely Sunni militia financed by the United States. The killings, along with new political assassinations, raise fears that Iraq may be on the verge of a renewed war between Sunnis and Shiites. Many Sahwa members are former insurgents from Anbar Province who agreed in late 2006 to change sides and fight alongside U.S. Marines against al-Qaeda. Iraq Election Results Challenged as Some Victors Are Linked to Saddam's Party

The aftermath of the closely contested parliamentary election in Iraq got even more complicated Monday as a justice commission claimed six of the winners had loyalties to Saddam Hussein's outlawed Baath Party. The Accountability and Justice Commission run by two Shiite Muslims wants to nullify the victories of those candidates, a move that could alter the overall outcome of the election, which gave a bloc aligned with former Prime Minister Ayad Allawi a razor-thin triumph over incumbent Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki's coalition, the Washington Post reported. Here's how the dots connect: ...

Oil has been the main source of hope for Iraq's economic future to a succession of Iraqi leaders and their U.S. counterparts since the Bush administration ousted Saddam Hussein more than six years ago. But sanctions against the Hussein regime, along with the war itself and widespread ...
