Obama Bans New East Coast Offshore Drilling: 3 Possible Reasons

(Dec. 1) -- Don't drill, baby, don't drill. Reversing its pre-BP oil spill disaster position, the Obama administration announced today that it will not engage in offshore drilling on the East Coast of the U.S. and the eastern Gulf of Mexico region, according to The Associated Press. The original policy, announced three weeks before the gulf oil spill, would have permitted authorized drilling from the Delaware coast to waters near central Florida, as well as in northern Alaska. The new policy, however, does maintain the possibility for drilling near Alaska. "Our revised strategy lays out a ...

The request by Thompson, chairman of the committee on homeland security, was made Thursday after The New York Times reported that some of the FEMA trailers were being sold as temporary housing units for cleanup workers in Louisiana. Obama Oil Spill Speech: TV Address Tonight From the Oval Office

He came, he saw, he ate shrimp. Can he conquer? Tonight will tell. President Obama's fourth trip to the Gulf Coast, beginning Monday morning in Gulfport, Mississippi, and wrapping up Tuesday afternoon in Pensacola, Florida, has been one part charm offensive, one part listening tour and one part training session. His 24-hour visit to assess the impact of the spill on local economies and the latest on cleanup efforts will no doubt provide background for his address tonight from the Oval Office -- the first of his presidency. But whether Obama can succeed in laying the case for the federal ...

Obama Will Return to Gulf Friday as White House Battles to Check Spill

With the situation along the Gulf Coast rapidly deteriorating, President Barack Obama plans a second trip to Louisiana on Friday morning to assess efforts to stop an oil spill that is sending tar balls and black goo onto that state's beaches and into its precious marshes. The White House announced Obama's visit as BP workers readied an operation to plug the deep sea well with a "top kill" of dense mud that is to be shot into the wellhead nearly a mile beneath the surface in the Gulf of Mexico. Obama and his Cabinet have faced increasing pressure to take control of the situation after ...

Gulf Oil Spill: Cancellations and Worry Along the Coast

NEW ORLEANS -- Bearing out many peoples' worst fears during a month of heightening anxiety, thick oil is now coming ashore on stretches of Louisiana's gulf coast, especially the barrier islands. In some cases, the toxic sludge has also entered the inner salt marshes that nurture so much of the Bayou State's marine life, and thus its seafood industry. Patches of oil can be found from the Louisiana's eastward Chandeleur Islands, due south of Biloxi, Miss., to Marsh Island, due south of Lafayette, La. (Both sites are National Wildlife Refuges.) Measured in a relatively straight line along ...

Oil Spill: EPA Orders BP to Use Less Toxic Chemicals

Government regulators ordered British Petroleum Thursday to use a less toxic chemical to try and clean up the disastrous oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. The Environmental Protection Administration gave BP 24 hours to suspend use of the dispersant Corexit and and find a new chemical, The Los Angeles Times reported. The company must submit its list of agents for approval to the EPA. The order comes three days after Rep. Edward J. Markey (D-Mass.) questioned the toxicity of Corexit, which is banned in Britain because of possible harmful effects to sea life. "I commend the Obama administration ...
