Oklahoma

South Carolina's Alvin Greene has gotten more attention, but Oklahoma has its own unorthodox Democratic Senate nominee. Perennial candidate Jim Rogers, who never formally campaigns, easily won his party's primary in July. As with the previously unknown Greene, the odds are heavily against Rogers in his race against a popular Republican incumbent, Sen. Tom Coburn. While the contest for governor will be more competitive, polls indicate the GOP is likely to pick up the seat being vacated by Democratic Gov. Brad Henry, who is term limited. Henry's lieutenant governor, Jari Askins, faces Republican Mary Fallin, who gave up her seat in Congress to run for governor. The winner will become Oklahoma's first female chief executive. In House contests, Republican James Lankford is expected to fill the 5th District seat Fallin vacated. In the 2nd District, incumbent Democrat Dan Boren is favored to win his fourth term in Congress. Oklahoma is the only state in which McCain won every county in 2008.
