Sudan's President Accepts Southern Secession Vote

Sudan's beleaguered president, Omar al-Bashir, announced today that he accepts the results of a vote by his country's south to secede and form its own country -- a move that will ultimately diminish his power over roughly a third of Africa's largest nation. Almost 99 percent of voters in southern Sudan voted last month in favor of independence from the mostly Muslim and Arab north, according to results released today. The January vote was the last big step in implementing a 2005 peace treaty that ended Africa's longest civil war, between north and south Sudan. The status of one small but ...

Sudan Arrests Opposition Leader Amid Tunisia Uprising

Sudan arrested a prominent Islamic opposition leader early today in a wave of arrests coinciding with neighboring Tunisia's popular revolt, suggesting that other North African dictators may be seeking to tamp down similar uprisings before they happen. Tunisia's longtime President Zine El Abidine Ben Ali fled his country Friday after weeks of violent unrest that began with protests over food prices and other social grievances. Similar economic woes simmer under the surface in Sudan and other North African countries like Egypt, where authoritarian regimes rule with a strong fist over a mostly ...

Tensions High as Sudan Stands at Crossroads

Tensions High as Sudan Stands at Crossroads

UNITED NATIONS (Oct. 17) -- With fewer than 100 days left before the people of South Sudan vote on whether to declare independence from the North, international observers are warning that the Jan. 9 referendum could lead to another round in the deadly cycle of violence between the two sides. North and South have already endured decades of warfare, and the South is expected to vote for a split. In the latest hurdle, North Sudanese leaders declared it would be impossible to carry out a referendum in the oil-rich district of Abyei, which has to decide whether to go with the North or South ...

Obama to Young Africans: We Support You, 'but We Can't Do It for You'

Obama to Young Africans: We Support You, 'but We Can't Do It for You'

For President Barack Obama, son of Africa, the gathering on Tuesday of 115 young leaders from 47 sub-Saharan African nations in the East Room of the White House was an opportune time for the commander-in-chief to reaffirm his relationship with the continent. Though Obama's approval ratings happen to be, uh, tanking here at home, he continues to enjoy rock-star status overseas, especially on his father's home turf of Kenya. The president himself even made note of the positive mojo emanating from his ancestral home, saying: "Africa has some of our most loyal friends. Every survey that's taken, ...

Darfur Genocide Ruling Brings Old ICC Controversies Back Into the Spotlight

(July 12) -- The International Criminal Court (ICC) in The Hague today charged the president of Sudan, Omar Hassan Ahmad al-Bashir, with three counts of genocide against three ethnic groups in the Darfur region of the country. The charges include "genocide by killing, genocide by causing serious bodily or mental harm and genocide by deliberately inflicting on each target group conditions of life calculated to bring about the group's physical destruction." The United Nations estimates that more than 300,000 civilians have been killed since the civil war in Darfur began in 2003, with militant, ...

Joe Biden in Africa for World Cup, but Mainly Somalia and Sudan Talks

Members of the U.S. World Cup soccer team recently paid a visit to the White House, where they were greeted by the impressive trio of President Barack Obama, Vice President Joe Biden and former President Bill Clinton. Goodwill was in the air -- on Saturday, the U.S. team will face the English in a match that is expected to draw one of the largest audiences in the history of televised sports. The presidents, for their part, were especially enthusiastic about the team's footwear. "I want to be on this team just for the shoes," Clinton said. "This is the only team that I've ever seen that had ...

Sudan Secession and Fate of Darfur: Envoy Says U.S. Alone Can't Ensure Fair Vote

Sudan Secession and Fate of Darfur: Envoy Says U.S. Alone Can't Ensure Fair Vote

Despite the United States' best efforts and abundant resources, only an international effort can ensure a successful vote on secession in Sudan and block a renewed civil war there, according to the U.S. envoy to that troubled African nation. International observers anticipate mass killings across Sudan -- especially in Darfur -- if the Southern region doesn't get global help to prepare for a January referendum that would allow it to secede. There's pressure on the U.S. to intercede in a stronger way than the referendum: Activists are urging the Obama administration to take a more public ...

Lubna Hussein, Standing Up to Sudanese Law on Who Wears the Pants

Lubna Hussein, Standing Up to Sudanese Law on Who Wears the Pants

French President Nicolas Sarkozy has made abundantly clear his views on head scarves and burqas, but if you thought we were through the contentious collision of Islamic law and modern fashion, we're not. On Tuesday, a Sudanese court heard the case against U.N. worker Lubna Hussein, who was taken into police custody with 10 other women, all accused of violating Article 152 of Sudanese law, which prohibits women from wearing pants in public. Islamic law governs much of Sudan, and if found in violation of Article 152, Hussein faces up to 40 lashes. ...
