WikiLeaks' Biggest Document Dump Yet Coming Monday: What to Expect

(Oct. 15) -- It's happening again ... only bigger. On Monday, the whistle-blower website WikiLeaks will release nearly 400,000 pages worth of classified U.S. Army documents on the war in Iraq, making it the single largest military leak in U.S. history. The number of documents will dwarf the 77,000 pages of sensitive material on the war in Afghanistan that WikiLeaks released in July. In preparation for the arrival of the as-yet-unspecified material, the US military has set up a 120-person task force to begin reviewing a cache of classified documents it believes might be found in what ...

Britain Had No Clue What to Do in Iraq, Colonel Testifies

Britain Had No Clue What to Do in Iraq, Colonel Testifies

(Sept. 14) -- In an admission more befitting of a satirical film, Col. Tim Collins, who led his Royal Irish regiment into Iraq at the outset of the war, told a British inquiry team today that his superiors had "absolutely no idea" what to do after the invasion. "I rather thought that there would be some sort of plan and the government had thought this through, and I was clearly wrong," he said. "It became very apparent to me shortly after crossing the border that the government and many of my superiors had no idea what they were doing." Collins was paid a visit at the army base in Tidworth, ...

Obama in Oval Office Address: Iraq War Combat Mission Is Over

Carrying out a major pledge of his 2008 presidential campaign, President Obama Tuesday night declared an end to the U.S. combat mission in Iraq after 89 months of fighting that has killed 4,416 Americans and cost $708 billion so far. "Operation Iraqi Freedom is over, and the Iraqi people now have lead responsibility for the security of their country,'' Obama said in the second Oval Office address of his presidency. He repeatedly paid tribute to the nearly 1.5 million service men and women who served in Iraq. "As commander in chief, I am incredibly proud of their service. Like all ...

US Withdrawal From Iraq Doesn't Look Promising Amid Bombing Spree

US Withdrawal From Iraq Doesn't Look Promising Amid Bombing Spree

(Aug. 26) -- From the U.S. perspective, the war in Iraq may be drawing to a close. But the violence continues, most recently with insurgent bombings in 13 towns and cities on Wednesday. The attacks killed more than 50 and sent a sufficiently clear message to the world: We're still here, and we'll vie for the country long after the Americans have gone. "The countdown has begun to return Iraq to the embrace of Islam and its Sunnis, with God's permission," read a statement on an insurgent website following the attacks. While combat units have been sent home, the U.S. still retains a force of ...

Mission Accomplished in Iraq?

Mission Accomplished in Iraq?

(Aug. 19) -- Seven years and five months after the U.S. invaded Iraq, seven years and three months after President George W. Bush declared mission accomplished, and three years and eight months after Saddam Hussein was killed by hanging, the final officially designated U.S. combat brigade has left Iraq. Though this officially ends Operation Iraqi Freedom, 56,000 U.S. troops will remain, many in a de facto combat role. They will oversee an Iraq where sectarian deaths have dropped dramatically but brutal terrorist bombings persist, and where worsening political deadlock could endanger the ...

Last US Combat Brigade Leaves Iraq: Instant Reactions

(Aug. 18) -- They're coming home -- early. On Wednesday evening in America, the Web lit up with the news that the final designated combat brigade, made up of some 4,000 U.S. soldiers, was leaving Iraq two weeks ahead of the Aug. 31 deadline set by President Obama. The historic moment, as MSNBC noted, effectively "... [Brings] to a close the active combat phase of a 7½-year war that overthrew the dictatorial regime of Saddam Hussein, forever defined the presidency of George W. Bush and left more than 4,400 American service members and tens of thousands of Iraqis dead." Of course, as the ...

Iraq War to Be Renamed

By  Christopher Weber - Politics Daily
Iraq War to Be Renamed

The war in Iraq, currently known as Operation Iraqi Freedom, is getting a new name. As of Sept. 1, the war will be called "Operation New Dawn," ABC News reported Thursday. The change will coincide with "the change of mission for U.S. forces in Iraq," Defense Secretary Robert Gates wrote in a memo this week to the Commander of Central Command, Gen. David Petraeus. Sept. 1 is the date the Obama administration has scheduled to begin withdrawing U.S. combat troops. The name change will send "a strong signal that Operation IRAQI FREEDOM has ended and our forces are operating under a new ...
