Brazil Judge Overturns Amazon Dam Suspension

SAO PAULO -- A Brazilian judge on Friday overturned a lower court ruling that suspended work on a massive hydroelectric dam in the Amazon jungle state of Para. Federal judge Ronaldo Desterro ruled last week that Brazil's environmental agency had erred when it approved work to begin on the Belo Monte dam. He said 29 environmental conditions had not been met, such as the recovery of degraded areas and measures to guarantee the navigability of rivers. On Thursday, Judge Olindo Menezes of a higher federal court overturned the suspension, saying in a statement there was no need for all the ...

Spain Beats Paraguay in World Cup Quarterfinals

JOHANNESBURG (July 3) - David Villa scored in the 83rd minute Saturday to give Spain a 1-0 win over Paraguay and its first-ever spot in the World Cup semifinals. The ball fell to Villa in the area after Pedro Rodriguez hit the post and Villa took one touch before curling a shot in off the far post. The striker's tournament-high fifth goal sets up a semifinal against Germany in Durban on Wednesday. Paraguay's defense mostly kept Spain's vaunted attack at bay, and each team couldn't convert a penalty kick. Spain goalkeeper Iker Casillas saved a 59th-minute penalty by Oscar Cardozo and ...

The Bushes and the Moons

The Bushes and the Moons

George W. Bush's seven years in the White House have fueled all kinds of terrible, paranoid conspiracies -- and the greatest, weirdest Bush Conspiracy is the "Exile To Paraguay" tale. The story goes like this: George W. Bush and/or George H.W. Bush bought hundreds of thousands of acres in Paraguay, adjoining a similar spread owned by the Unification Church's Rev. Sun Myung Moon. Both massive parcels are hidden within a remote South American wilderness atop the world's biggest freshwater aquifer adjoining a secret U.S. military airbase. Oh, and there's a special non-extradition law to protect ...

USA: 1, Paraguay: 3, Keller: Done

By  Brian Cook - AOL News
USA: 1, Paraguay: 3, Keller: Done

I expected many internet commenters to be unnecessarily overheated about the Argentina loss, and they were. But one unexpected item was the venom directed at Kasey Keller's performance. It was confusing. As I watched that game I didn't work up any special ire for anyone other than Eddie Gaven and Taylor Twellman. Well, after watching Keller wave helplessly at a trio of balls in the USA's 3-1 loss to Paraguay hours ago, I am no longer surprised. Though he could hardly be faulted on an impeccable stoppage time free kick, the reason that kick was academic was because he made a hash of Paraguay's ...
