Man Bites Dog, Then Sues Over Police Canine's Act

PHOENIX -- A 33-year-old man who bit back after he was caught by a Phoenix police dog is suing police. Erin Sullivan alleges the dog violated his civil rights and used excessive force to capture him after he ran from officers in Glendale during a burglary investigation last year. Police say Sullivan bit the dog back, injuring it. The lawsuit names the cities of Phoenix and Glendale and four officers. Precursor filings to the lawsuit sought $200,000 from Glendale and $250,000 from Phoenix. Officials in Glendale and Phoenix have declined comment. Sullivan also alleges Glendale police ...

Arizona Legislature OKs Presidential 'Birther' Bill

PHOENIX - The Arizona Legislature gave final approval late Thursday night to a proposal that would require President Barack Obama and other presidential candidates to prove they are U.S. citizens before their names can appear on the state's ballot. Arizona would become the first state to require such proof if Gov. Jan Brewer signs the measure into law. Republican Rep. Carl Seel of Phoenix, the author of the bill, said the bill wasn't about opposition to Obama. "This bill is about the integrity of our elections," Seel said. Thirteen other states have considered similar proposals this year. ...

Junk Mail Artist Turns Postal Refuse Into Amazing Portraits

Sandhi Schimmel Gold may be the most unusual person in the world. How so? Well, unlike most people, she actually enjoys getting junk mail. Even stranger: She may make more money off it than the companies that send it to her. Gold, 56, is perhaps the world's only artist who uses junk mail as her medium. That's right, she makes beautiful, intricate collages using old menus, catalogs and coupons that come to her in her mailbox. ...

YUMA, Ariz. - Inspectors have found small, subsurface cracks in three more Southwest Airlines planes that are similar to those suspected of causing a jetliner to lose pressure and make a harrowing emergency landing in Arizona, a federal investigator said Sunday. Southwest said in statement that two of its Boeing 737-700s had cracks and will be evaluated and repaired before they are returned to service. A National Transportation Safety Board member told The Associated Press later Sunday that a third plane had been found with cracks developing. Christine Ziegler, AP A Southwest ...

Southwest Grounds About 80 Planes After Scare

PHOENIX - Flight attendants had just begun to take drink orders when the explosion rocked the cabin. Aboard Southwest Flight 812, Shawna Malvini Redden covered her ears, then felt a brisk wind rush by. Oxygen masks fell, the cabin lost pressure, and Redden, now suddenly lightheaded, fumbled to maneuver the mask in place. Then she prayed. And, instinctively, reached out to the stranger seated next to her in Row 8 as the pilot of the damaged aircraft began a rapid descent from about 34,400 feet in the sky. "I don't know this dude, but I was like, 'I'm going to just hold your hand,'" ...

Ariz. Senate Rejects Illegal Immigration Bills

PHOENIX -- The Arizona Senate soundly defeated five bills aimed at illegal immigration on Thursday in a marked departure from last year, when enactment of a tough local enforcement measure put the state at the heart of a fierce national debate over the issue. Majority Republicans were split in their votes on the defeated bills, which included two measures intended to force a U.S. Supreme Court ruling against automatic citizenship for U.S.-born children of illegal immigrants. The other three dealt with health care, public services and everyday activities such as driving. With business leaders ...
