True to form, I was too busy to go to the meeting and missed my own firing yesterday; don't you hate it when that happens? (All my life, my mom has been saying I'd be late to my own funeral, so could we please not tell her she was right?) There were a few other mix-ups, too, with the result that some AOL employees were invited to the Meeting of Death by accident, while others who were supposed to have been on the layoff list were walking around like Bruce Willis in "The Sixth Sense." Also in error, I mistakenly received some last-minute communications re: the best time to tell an AOL News ...
(Nov. 29) -- In a modest yet conservative-minded decision, President Barack Obama proposed a two-year federal pay freeze on Monday to reduce the nation's rising debt. Should it pass, the salary freeze, which the White House is calling the first of many difficult decisions involving debt-reducing sacrifices, will apply only to civilian federal workers, meaning that it would not affect military personnel. "The hard truth is that getting this deficit under control is going to require some broad sacrifice and that sacrifice must be shared by employees of the federal government," Obama said ...
(Nov. 12) -- The first Michael Steele challenger is here. Former Michigan GOP Chairman Saul Anuzis announced today that he will run for Republican National Committee chairman. Anuzis will be making his second effort at attaining the position after finishing third in the 2009 race won by the current RNC chairman, the often controversial Michael Steele. Before releasing a full letter to the RNC in a blog post -- titled "That's Saul, Folks!" -- Anuzis declared his candidacy this morning via Twitter: .bbpBox3062227661758464 ...
Former Vice President Dick Cheney, in an appearance today at the National Press Club, offered support for marriage equality:"I think that freedom means freedom for everyone," replied the former V.P. "As many of you know, one of my daughters is gay and it is something we have lived with for a long time in our family. I think people ought to be free to enter into any kind of union they wish. Any kind of arrangement they wish. The question of whether or not there ought to be a federal statute to protect this, I don't support. I do believe that the historically the way marriage has been regulated ...
As I reported Thursday, the White House denied reports in the British press that the Abu Ghraib photos being blocked by the President contained images of rape and sexual abuse. In a rather unusual move, the White House sent out the following email early on Saturday:Important Please Read: From White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs A number of you have asked about or reported on a recent article in the Telegraph that inaccurately described photos which are the subject of an ongoing lawsuit. Both the Department of Defense and the White House have said the article was wrong, and now the ...
See what I did there? It's like a Catch 22, only 4 times as bad. Worse, really, but 88 went well with the rest of the headline. In rendering its decision to uphold Proposition 8, the California Supreme Court ignored not only their own precedent but their reason for existing. Upon advice of counsel, I decided to bite the bullet and try to wade through the 136-page Prop 8 decision to find out where the whole thing went wrong. After doing so, I can only conclude than that the court wrote their decision to fit a pre-ordained outcome. That outcome was best described by Below the Beltway's Doug ...
A slew of conservative blogs have been attacking Sonia Sotomayor, President Obama's nominee for the US Supreme Court, for a statement that she made in 2005:Judicial Confirmation Network, a conservative group that focuses on judicial nominees, made reference to the quote in a statement this morning condemning Sotomayor's nomination, alleging that Sotomayor "thinks that judges should dictate policy." Conservative bloggers have focused on it as well: The Weekly Standard, Townhall.com, and NewsBusters have all featured posts on the comment this morning.Ed Rawls at Cubic Politics notices a striking ...
