Congressional Approval Drops Below 20 Percent, Poll Finds

Americans' approval of the job Congress is doing is on the decline again, hitting 18 percent this month after inching above the 20 percent mark in February, according to a new poll out Friday. The Gallup survey found that Congress' approval rating is "essentially back to where it was just after last November's midterm elections." Following a historical trend, voters' approval bumped up slightly when the new Congress took office in January, giving the GOP control of the House. Americans generally feel better about their representatives on Capitol Hill immediately following power shifts. But ...

Majority Opposes Limits on Collective Bargaining Power, Poll Finds

Most Americans say they are against any laws reducing the collective bargaining power of unionized civil service workers as a way to balance a state's budget, according to a new survey out Tuesday. The USA Today/Gallup poll comes as there's no end in sight to the week-long budget showdown between Wisconsin's public employee unions and Gov. Scott Walker. Pollsters found that 61 percent of respondents would oppose a law in their state similar to the one being floated by Walker that would reduce the ability of Wisconsin's state employee unions to bargain. Just 33 percent said they would support ...

Americans Say Reagan Is Greatest President, Poll Finds

Number 40 is No. 1. Just in time for Presidents Day, Ronald Reagan tops a list of the nation's greatest chief executives, ahead of Abraham Lincoln, according to a new survey out Friday. The Gallup Poll puts Reagan, with 19 percent, in the top spot for the third time. Reagan also occupied the position in 2001 and 2005 -- and he has been in the top three eight times since Gallup started asking the "greatest president" question 12 years ago. Lincoln garnered 14 percent, followed very closely by Bill Clinton, with 13 percent. John F. Kennedy, who was on top in 2000 and tied with Lincoln in ...

GOP Candidate Would Tie Obama in 2012, Poll Finds

Voters are as likely to support the GOP candidate -- whomever that may be -- as they are President Obama in 2012, according to a new survey out Wednesday. The Gallup poll found 45 percent of respondents said they would vote for Obama for a second term, compared with 45 percent saying they'd back "the Republican Party's candidate." The numbers were similar to the results for the same question when it was asked a year ago, according to Gallup. While Obama enjoyed wide support from women and nonwhites in 2008, the same might not be true in 2012. Gallup found a majority of whites favor the GOP ...

Poll Shows Most Americans Favor Suspending Work on Health Care Bill

A new Gallup poll released Friday shows that a majority of Americans, 55 percent, believe lawmakers should suspend work on reforming health care and consider new proposals that have more Republican support. Thirty-nine percent say the Democrats should continue to try to pass the bill currently being negotiated in conference committee. The poll was conducted on Jan. 20, in the wake of Scott Brown's election to succeed Ted Kennedy as senator from Massachusetts, an unexpected triumph of a Republican in a solidly Democratic state. The poll found that 72 percent of Americans believe Brown's ...

Rasmussen Poll: Tea Party Beats GOP on Generic Three-Way Ballot

More Americans would vote for a "Tea Party" candidate than a Republican, according to a Rasmussen poll released Monday that quizzed voters on a hypothetical three-way ballot. Respondents were asked to assume that the "Tea Party" was an organized new party, despite the fact that it is highly unlikely the grassroots conservative movement that has gained momentum this year will become a third party.A majority of Americans said they would vote Democratic (36 percent), while the number who said they would vote "Tea Party" (23 percent) slightly edged out Republican voters (18 percent). Another 22 ...
