Pope Names New Head for Disgraced Order

(July 9) -- Pope Benedict XVI has appointed an outsider to revamp one of the Catholic Church's richest, most conservative and most disgraced orders, the Vatican announced today. Velasio De Paolis, the archbishop of Thelepte in Tunisia and president of the Prefecture for Economic Affairs of the Holy See, will assume command of the Legionaries of Christ as part of an overhaul of the order that began in May. De Paolis, 74, is a canon lawyer who will be an interim leader of the Legion, an enormous and influential order with priests in 22 countries. Along with two vice-delegates, De Paolis is ...

Pope Sued in Wisconsin Clergy Sex Abuse Case

MILWAUKEE (April 22) -- A man who says he was molested by a priest while a student at a Catholic school for the deaf filed a federal lawsuit today against Pope Benedict XVI, the Vatican and senior church officials, saying the Vatican knew the priest was a pedophile and could have stopped the sexual abuse. The plaintiff was identified only as John Doe 16, an Illinois man who said he was sexually abused by the Rev. Lawrence Murphy at St. John's School for the Deaf in a suburb of Milwaukee. The lawsuit asks that the Vatican be forced to release secret files with the names of clergy sex abusers ...

Questions Arise About Priest From Pope's Old Diocese

(March 12) -- The fallout from the growing Catholic sex abuse scandals finally reached as far as the pope Friday when it was revealed that Benedict XVI knew a priest was a pedophile in 1980 but approved a stint in therapy that allowed him to continue in the ministry, where he remains today. Benedict was an archbishop in Germany when the case began in 1980. The priest was accused of forcing an 11-year-old boy to perform oral sex on him, the German newspaper Sueddeutsche Zeitung reported Friday night. Benedict approved a decision moving the priest, identified only as "H," to a rectory in ...

Vatican Faces Widening Sex Abuse Scandals

(March 9) -- Sexual abuse scandals mired the Catholic Church on Tuesday as inquiries in Germany, Austria and the Netherlands intensified and the Vatican digested allegations that the Mexican founder of one of the church's most favored sects sexually molested his illegitimate sons. The new revelations come less than a month after Irish bishops were summoned to the Vatican to discuss decades of clerical sexual abuse in Ireland. A delegation of German bishops is scheduled to meet with Pope Benedict XVI on Friday about the growing crisis in Germany, where more than 170 students have claimed ...

Pope OK After Woman Knocks Him Down at Mass

VATICAN CITY (Dec. 25) - Pope Benedict XVI delivered his traditional Christmas Day blessing Friday, looking tired and unsteady but otherwise fine hours after being knocked down by a woman who jumped the barrier at the start of Mass in St. Peter's Basilica. The Vatican said the 82-year-old Benedict was unhurt in the fall and that his busy Christmas schedule would remain unchanged. French Cardinal Roger Etchegaray, an 87-year-old Vatican diplomat, fractured his hip in the commotion and will be operated on at Rome's Gemelli hospital, Vatican spokesman the Rev. Federico Lombardi said. ...

Barry and Benedict Meet in the Land of Caesars and Martyrs

ROME -- In the land of Caesars and martyrs, the 44th President of the United States on Friday met the 264th successor of St. Peter. Much ado surrounded this historic meeting, particularly among American Catholics, some of whom perceive this encounter as a celebrity death match of epic proportions. The fact is that through the 2,000-year-old Christian presence in the Eternal City, there have been many more troubling meetings. St. Peter met Nero (ended badly) Gregory VII met the Holy Roman Emperor Henry IV (ended badly) and the list goes on. ...

The Pope Joins Facebook

Pope Benedict XVI is bringing new meaning to the term, "social media evangelist." Theology and church life can be powerfully expressed through social media tools and, apparently, Pope Benedict gets that. Mashable's Adam Ostrow reports that the pope--who has already joined the YouTube crowd--now has a Facebook application and a related website, Pope2You. The app allows users to send virtual postcards with papal messages and photos to friends on Facebook. The pope writes in a message for World Communications Day, "New Technologies, New Relationships. Promoting a Culture of Respect, Dialogue ...

How Israel Could Have Been a Better Host to Benedict

ROME -- Abraham would have been disappointed. Ever since the first patriarch hosted the three angels at his table, hospitality has been considered one of the highest virtues in the Middle East. But thus far, Pope Benedict XVI's pilgrimage to the Holy Land this week has been marked by two different versions of welcome. ...
