Giant Pigs Displayed in Taiwan's Pig of God Festival

Revelers in Taiwan paraded the bodies of giant pigs through the streets of New Taipei City during a controversial celebration called the Pig of God festival. Farmers spent years fattening up more than 60 pigs with special feeds and other treatments before bringing them to the annual heaviest pig contest on Feb. 8, which marks the Chinese Lunar New Year. The obese pigs are slaughtered and painted before being put on floats outside a Taoist temple. Animal rights activists have long opposed the Pig of God festival, arguing that the government shouldn't allow the public slaughter of the pigs -- ...

Pigging Out: Baltimore Bar Hosts 'Bacon Happy Hour'

(Dec. 14) -- Bacon. It's everywhere: on our plates, in our drinks and constantly on our minds. Now, the popular pork product is even showing up at a dive bar in Baltimore -- at a tiny watering hole called Bad Decisions that's quickly becoming the place to pig-out. Every month, Bad Decisions -- located in the lively Baltimore bar district of Fells Point -- differentiates itself from the dozens of other bars in the area by hosting a smokin' hot event called "Beer & Bacon Happy Hour." Courtesy of Bad Decisions Every month, Bad Decisions owner John Reusing hosts a popular event called ...

Sen. Reid Calls Earmarks an 'Obligation'

Sen. Reid Calls Earmarks an 'Obligation'

(Nov. 17) -- As Senate Republicans moved to enact a two-year moratorium on earmarks this week, dissent roiled the ranks of Democrats and Republicans over the practice that allows individual lawmakers to designate federal funds for specific projects, usually in their states. Although Senate Republicans have vowed to halt the practice, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid defended it Tuesday as the obligation of every member of Congress. ...

Opinion: What's So Bad About Earmarks?

Opinion: What's So Bad About Earmarks?

(Nov. 16) -- Few words are dirtier in Washington than "earmark." Soon-to-be House Speaker John Boehner has vowed to ban them. President Barack Obama has called for earmark reform. The chairmen of the president's debt commission say the practice should be eliminated. And on Monday, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., reversed himself and says he now backs an earmarks moratorium. Meanwhile, Rep. Darrell Issa, the California Republican expected to chair the House Oversight Committee next year, called Obama "one of the most corrupt presidents in modern times." He later scaled back his ...

Michele Bachmann's Farm Received Over $250,000 in Federal Subsidies

Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann has made herself a prominent face in the Republican Party in 2009, delivering incendiary speeches at Tea Party protests against taxes, bailouts, and other forms of government intervention. Last week, she hosted a rally in Washington against health care reform, which she opposes as a "government takeover." But according to a report by the liberal political Web site Truthdig, Bachmann is not so vociferous about her distaste for "socialized" industry when it comes to her family farm in Minnesota, which accepted over a quarter of a million dollars in federal ...

Defense Bill Loaded with Earmarks

By  David Sessions - Politics Daily
Defense Bill Loaded with Earmarks

A defense spending bill that contains several key provisions favored by the White House and Defense Secretary Robert Gates -- killing the F-22 fighter jet, for example -- is expected to reach the Senate floor sometime Tuesday. But attached to the $636 billion bill is $2.65 billion in earmarks, ranging from unwanted defense projects to targeted pork for campaign donors. The bill "would add $1.7 billion for an extra destroyer the Defense Department did not request and $2.5 billion for 10 C-17 cargo planes it did not want, at the behest of lawmakers representing the states where those items ...

Egyptian Government, Egyptian Pig Farmers Square Off Over Swine Flu

We previously reported in this space that the Egyptian government has ordered the slaughter of the nation's herd of 300,000 pigs to stem the surge of swine flu that never existed to begin with. And while the Egyptian pigs have been taking the news of their death sentences with utmost diplomatic grace, the farmers that own them have been somewhat less cooperative...Egyptian police and armored cars charged into a crowd of a 1,000 irate pig farmers armed with stones and bottles, leaving 12 people injured as residents of a Cairo slum resisted government efforts to slaughter the nation's pigs to ...

U.S. Government to Announce There Is No Swine Flu

Yes, you read that correctly. There is no swine flu, folks. End of story.Well okay... here's the thing, techincally speaking. See, there really is a deadly flu ripping across North America, but do you have any idea how much pork industry lobbyists contribute to federal politicians each year? Therefore, the government is going to rename the swine flu. The one criterion is something that doesn't kill the public's appetite for cooked pig...U.S. officials said Tuesday they may abandon the term swine flu, for fear it's confusing people into thinking they could catch it from pork - which is flat-out ...

At the Tea-Baggers' Meeting: Brainwashing Devices Are Coming

At the Tea-Baggers' Meeting: Brainwashing Devices Are Coming

I was all set to write about how the media's mockery of the "Tea Party Movement," re-dubbed "Tea-bagging" by the sexual-slang-ignorant Griff Jenkins, is threatening to turn the sac-obsessed revolutionaries into sympathetic figures. I mean, we get it. Tea-bagging has 2 meanings. Actually, it really only has one.But then, Political Machine trollbuster Cube sent me this video, which is too good to pass up. I'll scold my fellows tomorrow. Today, we feast on tea-baggy awesomeness. The fun really starts at about the 3:30 mark.I guess the guy did't get the memo, or he's also accusing ...
