The War App: Smart Phones Could Control Drone Cameras

(Dec. 14) -- "Droid wars" could be the new "drone wars" as defense firms work to develop smart phone applications for the military, based on the increasing popularity of the iPhone, Android and similar devices. Smart phone apps have taken off in the commercial marketplace, allowing consumers with smart phones to pay bills, make restaurant reservations or check arrival times for planes. But with the rapid proliferation of smart phones among soldiers, companies see a new market for apps. One company is developing applications for smart phones that would allow soldiers to control the cameras on ...

Air Force Drone Patrols Reach New High

(Nov. 5) -- More than two years after being sharply criticized by the secretary of defense for not flying enough surveillance missions, the U.S. Air Force has almost doubled the number of unmanned Predator and Reaper aircraft combat patrols. "On the second [of November], we stood up our 45th CAP [combat air patrol], and we're on target to deliver on time what our nation has asked of us to deliver," Lt. Gen. Philip Breedlove, the Air Force's deputy chief of staff for operations, plans and requirements, told reporters Thursday. The Air Force is on schedule to reach its target of 65 CAPs, he ...

FAA Resists Push for More Drones in US Airspace

(June 14) -- Demands from U.S. lawmakers to deploy more drones along the U.S.-Mexican border is forcing the Federal Aviation Administration to consider opening the congested skies over the U.S. to unmanned aircraft. In recent months, Texas politicians have requested that the military help provide more Predator unmanned aircraft to add to the small fleet of drones already patrolling the U.S.'s southern border. But the FAA fears it may be unsafe to allow the additional drones in civilian airspace, The Associated Press reports. Though Predators are currently flying in support of operations in ...

US Drone Crew Blamed for Afghan Civilian Deaths

(May 29) -- The U.S. military issued a scathing report today blaming "inaccurate and unprofessional" work by the operators of an unmanned American drone for the deaths of at least 23 Afghan civilians in a botched missile strike earlier this year. Investigating a February attack on a convoy in Afghanistan's Uruzgan Province, the military concluded that inexperienced American pilots ignored or downplayed signs that Afghan civilians were in the group of vehicles. At the time, U.S. commanders thought the convoy was ferrying Taliban reinforcements to a nearby village where U.S. Special Forces and ...

'Transformer' Touted as Next-Gen Combat Drone

(May 26) -- It takes off like a helicopter, flies like a plane and doesn't need a pilot. That's what one U.S. aerospace company is proposing as the latest in combat drones. Maryland-based American Dynamics Flight Systems is working on a concept for an aircraft that can take off vertically but then switch to flying forward. Called the AD-150, the aircraft works by using ducted fans mounted on the wingtips to generate lift. Those fans can then tilt when the aircraft transitions to forward flight. "As a tilt-duct aircraft, it doesn't have the limitations a helicopter has," Wayne Morse, ...

Despite What Cheney Says, Is Obama Scoring Wins Against al-Qaida?

Despite What Cheney Says, Is Obama Scoring Wins Against al-Qaida?

On Tuesday, President Obama visited the National Counterterrorism Center outside Washington and declared that "because of our efforts" al-Qaida and its allies have "lost operational capacity." He cited recent arrests of terrorist suspects in Colorado, New York, Illinois, and Texas, asserting that these actions have made the nation safer. Afterward, his critics responded with . . . silence. Since Obama was sworn in, conservative hawks, led by former Vice President Dick Cheney, have been pounding the president for being weak on national security, accusing him of leaving the country vulnerable to ...
