Is Tweeting #ihadanabortion a Political Act? Or Just More Oversharing?

Is Tweeting #ihadanabortion a Political Act? Or Just More Oversharing?

A few days ago #ihadanabortion was trending. In other words, the hashmarked phrase broke into the top ten topics being posted about on the addictive social media and web based bulletin board Twitter. To explain this rather unusual public declaration, Tracy Clark-Flory of Salon writes that tweeting "#ihadanabortion" is a "provocative act," but the purpose of such an exercise is to make it less so. Acknowledging that, the "complexity of women's varying experiences is lost" when reduced to 140 characters, she notes the digitally delivered statement is nevertheless powerful. "Political slogans ...

Is Abortion a God-Given Right?

By  Christine Wicker - Politics Daily
Is Abortion a God-Given Right?

I was shocked when I heard the Rev. Carlton Veazey call a women's right to abortion God-given. And I was confused. Whatever could make the Rev. Veazey think God would favor selfish, fornicating women over pure innocent babies? If he's right, we can throw out the House and Senate compromises over abortion and get right on with providing health care for people who need it. Everybody wants to be on God's side. Right?I must admit that it's hard to see evidence for the reverend's claim. When God kicked Eve and Adam out of the Garden of Eden, he flung a whole fistful of curses at women. They would ...

Lawsuit: Catholic Nurse Forced to Assist in Late-Term Abortion

A Catholic nurse in New York claims she was forced in May to participate in the abortion of a 22-week-old fetus against her moral convictions. The nurse alleges in a lawsuit that Mount Sinai Hospital officials knew of her objections to abortion, but told her to assist in the procedure or face disciplinary action, including possible loss of her job and her nursing license. ...

Vatican Official Says Notre Dame Should Not Have Invited Obama

Archbishop Raymond Burke, the former Archbishop of St. Louis and currently head of the highest Vatican court in Rome, today criticized the University of Notre Dame for inviting President Barack Obama to deliver the commencement address at the school later this month. Burke, who came out against granting Communion to pro-abortion Catholics during the 2004 presidential campaign, said that Catholic institutions should not give a platform to, "those who teach and act publicly against the moral law."The Archbishop also had strong words for the university's decision to confer an honorary doctorate ...

Video: Sarah Palin Considered Aborting Trigg

A few weeks ago, our own Melinda Henneberger wrote about a speech that Sarah Palin gave to an Indiana "right to life" group. Video of that event, which has recently started making the rounds on the Internet, provides an unprecedented view into Palin's thought process regarding the birth of her son, Trigg Paxson Van Palin. Interestingly, Palin recounts how she considered getting an abortion when she first learned she was pregnant on an out-of-state trip, and, later, after learning via amniocentisis, that her fetus would likely develop Down syndrome. Watch: Palin went through with the ...

Sarah Palin Forced to Appoint Pro-Choice Judge

Sarah Palin Forced to Appoint Pro-Choice Judge

Alaska Governor Sarah Palin has risked running afoul of a right-wing pressure group by appointing a pro-choice judge to the Alaska Supreme Court. The rub here is that the Alaska Constitution only allows her to choose from nominees presented to her by an independent committee, who in this case were both pro-choice. From The Washington Times: Members of the Alaska Family Council (AFC), a nonprofit devoted to advancing socially conservative causes, encouraged Mrs. Palin to appoint Mr. Smith, and more than 100 people sent letters to the governor's office urging her to do so. But Mrs. Palin ...
