Tanks, Reinforcements Sent to Besieged Syrian City

BEIRUT -- The Syrian army sent more tanks and reinforcements into Daraa on Wednesday as part of a widening crackdown against opponents of President Bashar Assad's authoritarian regime, and gunfire and sporadic explosions were heard in the tense southern city. In addition to the unrest in Daraa - where the uprising began more than five weeks ago - security forces conducted sweeping arrests and raids elsewhere in the country, residents said. Witnesses and human rights activists also said the army deployed tanks around the Damascus suburb of Douma and the coastal city of Banias, the site of ...

Thousands of Syrian Troops Raid Rebellious City

BEIRUT -- Thousands of soldiers backed by tanks and snipers moved in before dawn to the city where Syria's anti-government uprising began, causing panic in the streets when they opened fire indiscriminately on civilians and went house-to-house rounding up suspected protesters. At least 11 people were killed and 14 others lay in the streets - either dead or gravely wounded, witnesses said. The military raids on the southern city of Daraa and at least two other areas suggested Syria is trying to impose military control on the centers of protests against President Bashar Assad, whose family has ...

Opponents of Yemen's President Divided Over Deal

SANAA, Yemen - Deep divisions within Yemen's opposition appeared to doom an Arab proposal for the president to step down within a month, raising the prospect of more bloodshed and instability in a nation already beset by deep poverty and conflict. President Ali Abdullah Saleh, who has ruled for 32 years, agreed Saturday to the Gulf Cooperation Council's formula for him to transfer power to his vice president within 30 days of a deal being signed in exchange for immunity from prosecution for him and his sons. A coalition of seven opposition parties generally accepted the deal. But ...

Egypt Prosecutor Orders Mubarak to Army Hospital

CAIRO -- Egypt's prosecutor general ordered Sunday that former president Hosni Mubarak be moved from his hospital in a Red Sea resort town to a military medical facility, according to his website. Mubarak was originally supposed to be moved to Cairo's Tora prison hospital, but it was deemed not yet ready to receive him, said a spokesman for Prosecutor General Abdel-Maguid Mahmoud. Instead the former president will stay in a military hospital until the prison facility is ready, said the spokesman Adel Said in a statement posted up on the prosecutor's Facebook page. Related ...

Yemeni President Agrees to Step Down in 30 Days

SANAA, Yemen - Yemen's embattled president agreed Saturday to a proposal by Gulf Arab mediators to step down within 30 days and hand power to his deputy in exchange for immunity from prosecution, a major about-face for the autocratic leader who has ruled for 32 years. A coalition of seven opposition parties said they also accepted the deal but with reservations. Even if the differences are overcome, those parties do not speak for all of the hundreds of thousands of protesters seeking President Ali Abdullah Saleh's ouster, and signs were already emerging that a deal on those terms would not ...

Dozens Killed in Deadliest Day of Syria Uprising

BEIRUT -- Syrian security forces fired bullets and tear gas Friday at tens of thousands of protesters across the country, killing at least 75 people in the bloodiest day of the monthlong uprising and signaling that the authoritarian regime was prepared to turn more ruthless to put down the revolt against President Bashar Assad. Among the dead were a 70-year-old man and two boys ages 7 and 10, Amnesty International said. In the southern town of Izraa, a man ran carrying the body of a young boy, whose hair was matted with blood from a gaping wound on his head, as another child wept and shouted, ...

Growing Discontent, Armed Attacks in Tripoli

TRIPOLI, Libya -- Moammar Gadhafi's opponents unfurl a rebel flag from a highway overpass in the dark and speed away. On the outskirts of the capital, masked protesters denounce the Libyan leader, then quickly disband. The pop of gunfire is heard almost every evening, some of it, according to dissidents, from sneak attacks on army checkpoints. Furtive resistance is the best those seeking Gadhafi's ouster can muster, under the heavy weight of fear in the most important stronghold of his rule. But the fact that such small-scale actions are taking place at all is a sign that activists are still ...

Syrian President Ratifies End of 50-Year-Old Emergency Rule

BEIRUT -- Syria's president has ratified an end to the country's 50-year-old state of emergency. Thursday's move was a formality after the government abolished the emergency laws two days ago. President Bashar Assad is trying to calm angry protests against his authoritarian rule by issuing a series of concessions. The emergency law allowed the regime a free hand to arrest people without charge. Assad also has launched a brutal crackdown on increasingly large demonstrations. Activists say at least 200 people have been killed in the government crackdown since the protests erupted last ...

Syria Lifts Emergency Law But Issues Stern Warning to Protesters

BEIRUT -- Syria's government approved lifting the country's nearly 50-year-old state of emergency Tuesday to meet a key demand of anti-government protesters, but opposition leaders dismissed it as an attempt by President Bashar Assad to claim reforms but maintain his hard-line rule. The blunt response suggested the month-old uprising could be entering a more volatile stage: protesters now aiming higher to seek Assad's ouster and his regime warning that the demonstrations must now end. "We want freedom!" chanted thousands of people in the southern city of Daraa and coastal town of Banias, ...

Egypt: At Least 846 People Killed in Protests, Uprising

CAIRO -- An Egyptian government fact-finding mission says at least 846 people were killed during the popular uprising that toppled longtime president Hosni Mubarak. The mission, consisting of a panel of judges, detailed in its Tuesday report what it described as the excessive use of force by security forces in the face of growing mass protests, which kicked off on Jan. 25. The report said that security forces fired live ammunition, placed snipers on rooftops and used vehicles to run over protesters. It added that more than 6,400 people were injured. ...
