EPA Staffers Were Forced to Ignore Science, Investigation Finds

Environmental Protection Agency staffers have been forced to ignore relevant science, have lacked key monitoring data on human health and environmental impacts, and have worked without crucial information needed to protect the public, according to the preliminary findings of a scientific advisory board. The Committee on Science Integration for Decision Making is still working on its investigation, but has quietly posted draft summaries on the agency's website of 73 interviews with 450 EPA employees -- an unusual bottom-up examination that could bring sweeping changes to the 40-year-old ...

NYC Takes a Bite Out of Salt Consumption

NYC Takes a Bite Out of Salt Consumption

(Jan. 11) – A New York Reuben may soon taste a little different. The New York Health Department today announced a new scheme aimed at an old seasoning: salt. The program, called the National Salt Reduction Initiative, aspires to reduce the amount of salt in foods by 25 percent over the next five years in an effort to lower the country's blood pressure and combat cardiovascular disease. The city says the initiative puts the salt shaker back in the hands of the people. Currently 80 percent of the salt Americans eat is already in the food they buy. Under this plan, the Health Department ...

Is the Business Community Pro-Swine Flu?

Is the Business Community Pro-Swine Flu?

This is cold. The U.S. Chamber of Commerce, the major business lobby, opposes legislation to provide workers paid sick leave -- even as flu season approaches. That's not only Scrooge-like. It's bad for public health. Allowing workers to stay home when they're ill has always been a good idea. They recover quicker. And who wants all those germs in the workplace? But it's more important when a nation is trying to prevent a pandemic. Health officials have been urging Americans to call in sick if they contract the flu, for that is one of the best ways to keep the spread of H1N1 in check. But plenty ...

Fury Erupts Over H1N1 Shots for Prisoners

While children, pregnant women and people with compromised immune systems wait in hours-long lines for H1N1 vaccines, some of their counterparts behind bars have no such hassle. Prisoners who fall into high-risk categories for swine flu will get the shots even while some members of the general public who are not high risk must wait until more of the precious doses are available. And that has some people hopping mad. "I have twin 2-year-olds that were three months premature and a 2-month baby, and I cannot get the vaccine for them," wrote one commenter on the Web site of The Beaumont ...

Robocall: No Swine Flu in D.C., People, SO DON'T PANIC!

Robocall: No Swine Flu in D.C., People, SO DON'T PANIC!

From Peoria, Ill., to Peoria, Ariz., health officials are hoping to dodge the outbreak of swine flu that so far is suspected of killing at least 149 people in Mexico and has caused one known death in the United States. But schools, colleges and universities around the country are also preparing for the worst. President Obama recommended that those with confirmed or suspected cases "strongly consider temporarily closing." Such measures have already been taken in Chicago and in a growing number of states including California, Texas, and Connecticut. In New York City, a public school half a mile ...
