Arrest Made in Killing of Tourist in US Virgin Islands

(July 14) -- A 22-year-old suspect has been charged in the shooting death of a teenage tourist in the U.S. Virgin Islands after turning himself in to the police, and more arrests are anticipated, a police spokeswoman told AOL News today. Steven Tyson has been charged with the murder of 14-year-old Lizmarie Perez Chapparro, who had been visiting the popular Coki Beach in St. Thomas with her Puerto Rican parents and brother to mark her upcoming quinceanera, a coming-of-age ceremony similar to a Sweet 16 celebration. Lizmarie was on an open-air tour bus when she was caught in a gunfight on ...

Puerto Rican Officials Scrap Millions of Birth Certificates

(April 21) -- In a dramatic bid to end fraud, identity theft and illegal immigration, Puerto Rico is voiding all birth certificates issued before July 1, 2010 -- forcing more than 5 million people to apply for new ones. The move will "protect the identity of all Puerto Ricans born on the island, and at the same time help the federal government with national security issues," Luis Balzac, spokesman for the Puerto Rico Federal Affairs Administration, said in a phone interview with AOL News. According to the U.S. departments of State and Homeland Security, Puerto Rican birth certificates ...

Adam Clayton Powell IV Starts Run Against Rangel

(April 12) --The son also wants to rise. New York State Assemblyman Adam Clayton Powell IV, the son of the first African-American to be elected to Congress in the state of New York, said today he intends to challenge Charles Rangel in this year's Democratic primary for his seat in the U.S. House of Representatives. The two men have a history. Rangel's victory over Powell IV's father, Adam Clayton Powell Jr., in the 1970 Democratic primary led to the civil rights icon's subsequent departure from Congress. Seth Wenig, AP New York State Assemblyman Adam Clayton Powell IV, center, announces ...

Obama's Magic Number

Obama's Magic Number

This weekend was more dizzying than a David Copperfield performance. O.K., maybe not, but it was eventful nonetheless. The Rules and Bylaws Committee apportioned delegates from Florida and Michigan. Puerto Rico held its primary. And a few superdelegates have stepped forward and declared. The upshot? Barack Obama's new magic number is 2,118 delegates. He is now 39.5 delegates shy of clinching the nomination. Hillary Clinton now has 1,916 delegates. There are 31 delegates still up for grabs in Montana and South Dakota. ...

No Quit in Clinton

No Quit in Clinton

Fresh off another lopsided win over Sen. Barack Obama in the Puerto Rico Democratic primary, Sen. Hillary Clinton is carrying her campaign through the finish line and making plans to keep on running. The Democratic primary season officially ends on Tuesday with the last two primary states of Montana and South Dakota. But thanks to the ruling of the Rules and Bylaws Committee of the Democratic National Committee on Saturday, Sen. Obama now cannot secure the magic number of delegates needed to clinch the nomination by winning primary contests. Sen. Clinton's campaign sees that as a new ...

Ricky Martin for Hillary

Ricky Martin for Hillary

Now that Puerto Rican Grammy Award winner Ricky Martin has endorsed Hillary Clinton, the New York senator perhaps hopes that the pop phenom's support will help woo some of the 2.5 million registered Puerto Rican voters when they vote in the Democratic primaries Sunday. Up to 1 million are expected to come out and vote. Here's what Clinton said in response to the former Menudo star's endorsement: "I am honored to have Ricky Martin's support. In addition to his great talent, Ricky is committed to improving the world through his philanthropic work, and I am grateful for his support. He is a very ...

Level That Playing Field

Level That Playing Field

We Americans are fond of touting our electoral process as proof that we possess a fair, unshakable democracy that is the envy of the world. We are the country that sends impartial observers across the globe to monitor the voting accuracy of other, less advanced countries. If any nation is qualified to sniff out irregularities or injustice, then it is these United States.Of course, if we have learned anything since the 2000 campaign that relied on a supreme court decision to give us our president, it is that our elections work just dandy when they aren't close. Otherwise, they are an utter ...

Obama Takes Clinton's Word on RFK Gaffe

Obama Takes Clinton's Word on RFK Gaffe

Maybe her V.P. chances aren't dashed after all. Campaigning in San Juan yesterday, Barack Obama said he believed that Hillary Clinton wasn't implying what so many people believe she was with her repeated reminders that Robert Kennedy was assassinated in June of '68. From The Washington Post, Obama told a Puerto Rican radio audience:"I have learned that, when you are campaigning for as many months as Senator Clinton and I have been campaigning, sometimes you get careless in terms of the statements that you make, and I think that this is what happened here. Senator Clinton says she did not ...

No Surprise Tuesday

No Surprise Tuesday

Obama wins big in Oregon and loses even bigger in Kentucky. And we've learned nothing that we didn't know before. Obama sucks with rural Appalachian type white people. Is this finally going to convince Hillary to bow out? I don't think so, If Obama wins, her next shot at the presidency is 2016 and who knows where she'll be then. If Obama loses she may have a shot in 2012. Either way, it pays off for her to stay in. If Obama loses, she's set to say, "I told you but you wouldn't listen." And if Obama wins, she's done anyway and won't need to convince a bitter and angry Democratic party to turn ...

Obama Supporters Face Indictment, Charges

With Puerto Rico's Democratic primary approaching, Sen. Barack Obama may begin to face questions about two of his biggest supporters on the island. Governor Anibal Acevedo Vila, a co-chair of Obama's campaign in Puerto Rico was indicted by Federal prosecutors along with 12 others on March 27th in what prosecutors called the largest government corruption scandal in Puerto Rico's history. Vila was charged with receiving cash and gifts in the form of expensive suits, vacations for his family and children, and personal contributions to enhance his salary. Vila also is alleged to have had his ...
