Libyan Rebels Reboot Cellphone Service After Gadhafi's Shutdown

Libyan rebels who'd resorted to waving flags to communicate after Moammar Gadhafi cut off the Internet have now rebooted a local cellphone network for their own use. The new network, rigged up with help from U.S.-trained Arab engineers, is giving many Libyans their first chance in a month to contact loved ones and see if they're dead or alive. The Libyan dictator shut down all Internet service and mobile phone links to the rebel-held east more than a month ago. And as chaos and fighting spread, outages have hit huge swaths of the whole country as well. Chris Hondros, Getty ...

PARIS -- France said today that Qatar will join the international operation against the forces of Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi within hours. French Defense Ministry spokesman Laurent Teisseire said Qatar warplanes will join the operation alongside French jets, as a "historic partner" of France in the Arab world. Speaking to reporters in Paris, he said the Qatari contribution will come "in the hours to come." He gave no other details. France has sent about 15 planes to eastern Libya today, French military spokesman Thierry Burkhard said. He said no civilian casualties have been reported by ...

Why Is Everyone So Scared of Little Bahrain?

Why Is Everyone So Scared of Little Bahrain?

Tensions have reached the boiling point in the tiny, but strategically crucial, island nation of Bahrain as a surprise and shocking crackdown by military police left at least four people dead today. The violence in Pearl Square, which included an attack on ABC News reporter Miguel Marquez, prompted U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton to phone her Bahraini counterpart to urge restraint. Protests inspired by the recent revolutions in Egypt and Tunisia inspired the Shiite Muslims in Bahrain, long a key U.S. ally, to begin demonstrating on Monday. The Shiites, who comprise ...

Need a Map of Bahrain? Here's a Geography Lesson [PHOTOS and VIDEO]

Where in the world is Bahrain? The government's brutal crackdown on protests has drawn international attention to the Middle Eastern nation. But some people are having trouble figuring out exactly where on the map their attention should be pointed. So Surge Desk has prepared a brief primer on Bahrain's geography. The Kingdom of Bahrain is an archipelago -- a chain of islands -- just to the east of Saudi Arabia and north of Qatar, about 15 to 20 miles away from each. It's in the Persian Gulf, in an inlet called the Gulf of Bahrain. It's quite tiny, at just 274 square miles, or roughly four ...

WikiLeaks Cable Reveals More Suspected 9/11 Plotters

A classified U.S. diplomatic cable released by the anti-secrecy group WikiLeaks has revealed the existence of previously undisclosed suspects linked to the 9/11 plot. According to the document, three men from the Gulf Arab state of Qatar visited target sites in New York and Washington in the month leading up to the attacks before leaving the country on Sept. 10, 2001. The British newspaper The Telegraph, which published the document, reports that the FBI has launched an international manhunt for the team. However, a U.S. official told The Washington Post that prosecutors studied the case in ...

Egypt Bans Arabic Broadcaster Al-Jazeera

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates -- The pan-Arab broadcaster Al-Jazeera said Sunday that Egyptian authorities ordered the closure of its Cairo news hub overseeing coverage of the country's massive street protests. The station denounced the move as an attempt to "stifle and repress" open reporting. The Qatar-based network has given nearly round-the-clock coverage to the unprecedented uprising against Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak and had faced criticism by some government supporters and other Arab leaders as a forum to inspire more unrest. Al-Jazeera's flagship Arabic channel has faced numerous ...

Ten Most Outrageous Stories From Outlandish 2010

This column comes the day after Tucker Carlson said Mike Vick should have been executed for his treatment of dogs and the Sugar Bowl CEO admitted he lobbied Ohio State to keep its players eligible to "protect the integrity" of the game. Protect the integrity of the bowl game at the expense of a university and NCAA integrity? Makes perfect sense in the Alice in Wonderland through the looking glass world of college football. Execute someone for a low end felony? Equally absurd rationale. Both of these stories serve as further evidence that 2010 represents the most absurd year in the history of ...

No Sex for Gays at Qatar World Cup? Was FIFA Chief Joking?

(Dec. 15) -- Gay soccer fans unsure about attending the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, where homosexuality is illegal, should rest assured that they can attend the games ... as long as they refrain from sex, that is. That's according to FIFA chief Sepp Blatter, who stuck his foot in his mouth at a press conference in Johannesburg when he suggested jokingly that gays would be welcome at the games but should "refrain from any sexual activities" while in Qatar. Blatter did say that he wanted the World Cup to be inclusive. "We don't want racism, we don't want any discrimination. What we want to do is ...

Qatari Parents Name New Daughter 'Fifa' After World Cup Bid Win

(Dec. 13) -- Qatar's successful bid to host the 2022 World Cup has inspired soccer-crazy local parents to name their new daughter after the sport's world governing body. The new parents named their baby daughter "Fifa" in tribute to the Federation Internationale de Football Association, soccer's Swiss-based top administrative organization. The unnamed mother told local newspaper Al Raya she gave birth to baby Fifa on Dec. 2, the same day Qatar was chosen to host the 2022 World Cup. Osama Faisal, AP Qataris react in the streets of Doha on Dec. 2 after the announcement that Qatar will host ...
