Pro-Choice Extremist Reportedly Arrested by FBI for Threats to Pro-Life Activists

The FBI in New York has reportedly arrested Theodore Shulman, a radical abortion rights campaigner with a long history of threatening pro-life activists, and charged him with making interstate threats against two abortion opponents who were not identified. The 49-year-old Shulman was arrested on Thursday and was being held without bond at the Metropolitan Correctional Center in New York City, according to pro-life activists who were alerted to Shulman's incarceration by federal investigators. An officer at the correctional center referred a calls about inmates to the public relations office, ...

Rand Paul Under Fire For Views on Civil Rights Act

Rand Paul Under Fire For Views on Civil Rights Act

Rand Paul, the son of Texas congressman Ron Paul and the newly minted Republican nominee for Senate in Kentucky, came under fire this week from Democrats and others after media appearances where he refused to fully embrace the Civil Rights Act of 1964, the law that legally ended segregation in the United States. Paul defeated Republican opponent Trey Grayson on Tuesday. During his victory speech, Paul said he was bringing a "message from the Tea Party," which expected him to "take our government back." Controversy broke out after Paul was interviewed on NPR's "All Things Considered" ...

Commencement Speakers 2010: Barack Obama, Glenn Beck Hit Campuses

Commencement Speakers 2010: Barack Obama, Glenn Beck Hit Campuses

Commencement season is arriving, and that means all the top schools are engaging in bouts of competitive name dropping. Commencement speakers tend to be a highly anticipated announcement among the nation's top schools, seeing who can secure the big brand names like "Clinton" or "Immelt." Speaker selection can often cause a bit of student unrest (see: Syracuse protests over this year's selection, JPMorgan Chase chief executive Jamie Dimon), and, at times, nationwide controversy (see: protests at Notre Dame over President Barack Obama's speech last year). More and more, commencement addresses ...

Elizabeth Warren: Bank Watchdog Who Belongs on Supreme Court

On Monday CNN reported that Elizabeth Warren, Harvard law professor and chair of the Congressional Oversight Panel for the Troubled Assets Relief Program (TARP), made the short list of nominees to replace Justice John Paul Stevens. What a difference a year makes. I called it here on Politics Daily last May, but back then I was dreaming more than predicting. ...

Rachel Maddow: D.C. to N.Y. Meat Mule

Rachel Maddow: D.C. to N.Y. Meat Mule

Usually gourmands bring food from Manhattan to D.C. But Wednesday morning, there was Rachel Maddow shlepping a foil-covered platter onto the 9 a.m. northbound Acela. Call it the Pork to New York run. But don't expect the MSNBC host to be happy about it, making quite clear her pique at playing culinary mule, during a brief Union Station chat with Jan Rothschild, a Sotheby's Art Institute veep. "I asked her if she was taking food to a bar mitzvah, and she said she is actually taking a large platter of pork from Washington to New York. I asked her why, and she said that someone gave it to ...

Leading Pundit on Gay Rights Sits In on Hearing

WASHINGTON (Feb. 2) – It isn't every day that the nation's top military leaders testify to Congress in favor of allowing gays to serve openly in the ranks. And so, like countless other celebrities who have made their way up Capitol Hill for a cause, the eponymous host of MSNBC's "The Rachel Maddow Show" was on hand Tuesday for what she called "great theater," Washington style. Amid retired generals, ousted gay soldiers and the Army linguist Dan Choi, who outed himself on her show, Maddow sat with the other media recording for posterity the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Adm. ...

Think Before You Plunk: Which Charity Will Use Your Haiti Donation Wisely?

Think Before You Plunk: Which Charity Will Use Your Haiti Donation Wisely?

Compassion and concern for the victims of Tuesday's earthquake outside of Port-au-Prince, Haiti, has prompted caring people to make donations to assist in their aid. I had planned to write a quick post discouraging donations to big, bloated, bureaucratic charities with overpaid CEOs and marketing budgets more appropriate for multinational oil companies than nonprofits. ...

A New Survivor Show: Watching a Week of Cable News and Living to Tell

A New Survivor Show: Watching a Week of Cable News and Living to Tell

I have been apartment-bound at home in Manhattan for the last four weeks with my left leg in a bright red cast (you can now choose from 12 designer colors) recuperating from successful Achilles tendon surgery. Unlike Jimmy Stewart in "Rear Window," I have been unable to find a good real-life murder to divert me. (Just my luck that New York City's crime rate is way down). So to preserve my sanity, I decided that I needed a mission as ambitious as cooking Julia Child recipes for 365 straight days and as foolhardy (and deleterious to my health) as eating non-stop fast food for a month. The ...

FBI Investigates Hanging of Census Worker

The case of a U.S. Census worker founding hanging from a tree in rural Kentucky is now being investigated by the FBI, suggesting that law enforcement official believe there were political motives behind the death. Bill Sparkman, a 51-year-old part-time census worker and teacher, was found Sept. 12 in a remote part of Daniel Boone National Forest. The word "FED" was scrawled across his chest. ...
