NC Faces Massive Price Tag in Storm Cleanup Effort

BONNETSVILLE, N.C. - Shards of glass from old bottles and furniture smashed by a tornado that tore through town littered the concrete floor of Rhonda Carter's antique store, shattering her plans to open an auction house in nearby Salemburg. A storage area in the back was flattened. "I just had a feeling something bad was going to happen, and it did," Carter said of Saturday, when storms raged through Bonnetsville and other parts of North Carolina, killing at least 21 and damaging or destroying more than 800 homes. "Now I'm starting over." From remote rural communities to the state's ...

Devastated South Looks to Recover From Killer Twisters

SANFORD, N.C. -- Lowe's store manager Michael Hollowell had heard the tornado warnings but his first clue that the danger was outside his front door came when he saw his staff running toward the back of the home improvement store. More than 100 employees and customers screamed in near unison when the steel roof curled off overhead Saturday. The store was becoming part of the wreckage left by a ferocious storm system bristling with killer twisters that ripped through the South. "You could hear all the steel ripping. People screaming in fear for their lives," Hollowell told The ...

North Carolina Gets Worst of Storms That Ravaged Swath of US

ASKEWVILLE, N.C. - A tornado-spewing storm system that killed at least 45 people across half the country unleashed its worst fury on North Carolina, where homes broke apart, trees snapped and livestock were swept into the air. Residents in the capital city and rural hamlets alike on Sunday mourned the dead, marveled at their own survival and began to clean up devastated neighborhoods. Observers reported more than 60 tornadoes across North Carolina on Saturday, but most of the state's 21 confirmed deaths occurred in two rural counties. A thunderstorm spawned a tornado that killed four people ...

Twisters Leave Dozens Dead, Destruction in 6 States

RALEIGH, N.C. - Rescue crews searched for survivors in wind-blasted landscapes Sunday in North Carolina, the state hardest hit by a storm system that spawned dozens of tornadoes from Oklahoma to Virginia and left dozens dead. The spring storm, North Carolina's deadliest in two decades, spun off 62 tornadoes in that state alone Saturday night. Eleven people were confirmed dead in rural Bertie County, county manager Zee Lamb said. Another four were confirmed dead in Bladen County, bringing the state's death toll to at least 21. Deaths reported by officials in five other states brought the U.S. ...

A North Carolina grand jury has indicted Zahra Baker's stepmother on a bigamy charge. Elisa Baker is accused of marrying the slain disabled girl's father, Adam, before divorcing her previous husband. The indictment, handed up Tuesday in Catawaba County Court, alleges Elisa Baker was still married to her previous husband in 2008, when she married Zahra's father in Australia. Zahra, a 10-year-old cancer survivor, was reported missing Oct. 9. The freckle-faced girl was born in Australia but moved to North Carolina when her father married Elisa Baker. Police have said her 42-year-old stepmother ...

Struck by Lightning AND Mauled by a Bear? What Are the Odds?!

(June 25) -- If minister Rick Oliver ever decided to stop believing in God, it would be quite understandable. Because Oliver is either living proof that the man upstairs works in strange and unusual ways -- or he's just one unlucky fellow. Earlier this month, Oliver, 51, who lives on a 17-acre farm near Raleigh, N.C., was mauled by a black bear in his front yard and ended up with a gouge in his wrist so deep that blood spewed like a hose onto his farmhouse floor when he took off his bandage. Ted Richardson, Raleigh News & Observer / MCT Rick Oliver, 51, of Cary, N.C., pictured June 17, ...

Obama Wins North Carolina

Obama Wins North Carolina

Obviously, this changes nothing in terms of who won the presidency. But it does mean that Barack Obama's candidacy helped redraw the electoral map even more than anyone thought. The Associated Press is now giving Obama North Carolina, concluding that there aren't enough uncounted ballots left for John McCain to overcome his lead. That win gives Obama 364 Electoral College votes, with Missouri the only state that's too close to call.North Carolina has traditionally been a solid red state, along with Virginia and Indiana, which Obama also won.No Democratic presidential hopeful has won North ...
